I am adding zooplankton to my tank right now for my acropora just because I was told to. What exactly does it do? What is its greatest benefit for sps?

If your adding zooplankton that is small enough in micron size to be eaten by the polyps of your sps, then you are good. ie: rotifers, oyster eggs, golden pearls, etc.

Corals ingest them for food.

It is food, so it feeds them.

What's the greatest benefit of food? I suppose that would be to prevent death due to starvation...
