the light isn't on it so the pics are kinda bad. i have yet to wire it up.
ill be keeping softies and zoa's...and 2 fairy wrasse's.
let me know what you guys think.

question..
only one piece of rock is "live rock" from a store, the rest are from another tank that have been boiled. will this affect the cycle?

Looks just like mine without the metal halides. I thuoght ..WOW someone has posted my tank (name's Kim too) I would suggest taking the bio-rings out of the Aquaclear. And remmember to rinse all the other media in fresh R/O once a week to kill bacteria.

Why would you want to kill the bacteria in the filter. It is benificial bacteria......

from experience with fairy wrasses, please make sure you do two things for success in this setup... it's small, but i think as a temporary domicile for a few months, they *should* be ok.

one, add them at the same time, with the lights off, that will allow them to set up their own territories in the dark, and not really go at it. they are pretty easy going fish, but will stake territories and defend them viciously if not added simultaneously, which i believe pretty much everyone that sells them recommends.

second, have a secure lid on the top of the entire tank. i and many others i know have lost fairy wrasses to jumping. especially in a tank that size, even when small, they will be under a lot of stress from the close proximity, and much more likely to jump. if they are small enough to get through egg crate, try other material, they'll find a way through the holes.

i would recommend moving them once they grow over 2". actually i would really recommend keeping just one, and add the 2nd one to the 72 at the same time when you move the first one over to your 72.

good luck! i have a mated pair of scott's on order for my 90. i love the genus, they are great.

thanx for the advice charlie.

theve been in qt together for about a week or 2 so they should be fine together..but i will take caution.

i know what you mean about the jumping. i lost a fairy about a month ago to jumping=(...and my velvet wrasse is to big to jump through the eggcrate...lol he has tryed..

The bacteria you want to keep are in your live rock. The bacteria in a filter will cause excess nitrates for your rock to convert into harmless gases.

The rings are the white rings you see when you look in your Aquaclear from the top in picture 2.

take out the bio rings and replace them with a fuge set-up. if you arent going to do that, dont rinse them. but if you do, do it with salt water, not fresh

those arent bio rings. You do mean the ceramic ones right? Aqua clear filters come with a media bag that is full of that Bene-becteria substrate stuff, not bio rings.

Im with G-13. I WANNA KNOW HOW TO MAKE A CHEAP MH LITE PLEASE! :)

chelskiw6, this is exactly what i plan on doing after the tank cycles. that's why i got such a big filter for only a ten gallon.

Can you please give details on what you did for your light set-up.

Gm 13 and MrMexReefer, I have not set up the lights yet. I have some ideas, and have been reading a lot but i am looking for some input as well. When i do it I will def. post on this how i did it. :-)

I found this cheap DIY MH over at nano-reef.com

Basically you buy a 300w or 500w Halogen floodlight at Wal-mart or the HD. the halogen bulb is the same size as a 70 mh. all you do is buy a 70w Mh ballast, power cord, and a 70w mh bulb and wire it all to together. Im just waiting to get a power cord and figure out how to ground it.

it comes out less than $100. which i think is a good deal.
heres the link...

Hi all..

the tank has been up and running for about 4 days. I have yet to see anything really spike. I tested on thursday and the ph was 8.6 everything else (nitrate, nitrite, ammonia) was 0ppm. I just tested it today ph was 8.0 and everything else was still at 0ppm.

when should i start to see a spike in ammonia?

is the reason why i havent seen anything becuase i only have one piece of live rock in it everything else is dead (i have LS but that is pretty much dead when you buy it anyways).

any ideas?

The fuge is a great idea. Rinse them in fresh R/O, that's the point. You want to kill the bacteria.
