What are the experiences using a Mag 7 or 9.5 externally in a closed loop? I want to try it on an OM squirt. I don't have a sump.

i had one once, and you could here the pump in the basement it was so loud, and that was on the third floor of the house. Mag pumps belong submerged. I would consider a little giant, genx, sequence or something. Anything but the mag. Now, with that said, i love my mag pumps i run, there just in a sump.

I've run mag 5, 7, 9.5 and 12 all externally at one time or another. They were never loud. But I guess it's all relative.

Anyway, a mag is a bad choice for a CL. They loose lots of flow due to pipe friction. Save up some money and spend the extra cash on a good external pump, like a panworld.

the mag 12 on my loop is super quiet.

I must have been doing something wrong, mine sounded like a chainsaw, but, i was using a mag24. I have run mag 9.5 externally for a aqua c skimmer, and to me there loud. But like people say, noise is relative.

i ran two mag 18s for a closed loop, neither one leaked and both were pretty quiet. i do know if you put a ball valve on the exit side of the pump and close it a bit, it makes the pump silent.

Mag9.5 here for CL, external. It sits on the carpeted floor behind the sump and is very quiet. I found it to be much louder as I increased the plumbing size, now it is all 3/4" hose and working awesome. Dialing back the outlet will indeed make it quieter.

My Mag7 as a return pump was so loud I removed it and now only use it for water changes.
