View Full Version : For those wanting better performance out of their skimmer....

I've got some extra Ekmat material and zip ties leftover from redoing my skimmer pumps and was considering helping some people mod their's to get better performance out of them. I figured that maybe all those interested could meet at my house one evening and we'll hook everyone up at the same time. I think I have enough for about 10 pumps...Anyone interested? I'm pretty sure Lon and Ztt were....

If anyone is curious if this works...hell yeah!!!!

I picked up a GenX 1500 that Kent modded with a meshwheel to use as a feedpump. After tinkering with the air I was letting into the skimmer tonight this is 2 hours worth of skimmate. I am going to have to drill my cup and run a hose out to collect waste if it keeps peforming like this.

The cup since 7 tonight...yes it was clean at 7

Poor shot of the skimmer showing the foam...it is milky white all the way down.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v362/sirreal63/125/g3mesh2.jpg

The Sedra 5000 is still stock and recirculating, the GenX is just being used as the feed pump with the meshwheel pulling in extra air. I was definately getting too much air wide open but restricting the air has allowed me to fine tune it. This mod works!!!

Chad- a guy on my thread in the DIY forum was getting close to 900LPH out of the Sedra 5000- There's pics to prove it. I can tell ya that this stuff is frikin amazing and in the missing link between low end skimmers such as ASM and Octopus and the the big dawgs.

Steve- That sounds like a plan to me. I'd have to know ahead of time how many people are bringing pumps to mod though so we can make sure I have enough material- I can get more if needed.

Sirreal- Glad to see it's working out for you! I knew that pump would come in handy at some point :-P

RF- Is that a new ER with the new pinwheel?

To be honest, you won't gain that much if it's got the new style impeller. You should get ahold of them and find out if it has the new style impeller and/or how much air the pump is pulling.....Let me know what you find out...

The SP4 (4100) is pulling about 1050LPH on those ER's so you're pretty much fine where you're at......I'm getting just under 1200 LPH on my 4100 but with a beefier venturi as well. I think you'll be fine where you're at...

I have a power inverter that hooks up to the car that lets you know how much watts it pulling so you know if you can add more.

How many watts is the pump suppose to be, I think the inverter is only up to 400Watts.

I have noticed that each one of my pumps pull more than what the box states.

OK it looks like we're going to meet at my house at 6pm to do the mods first and head to dinner afterwards...Sound like a plan?

I wanted to run a couple of things by you guys first. For those that are bringing Sedras, you'll need to bring pairs of snips to cut the needles off your impeller assemblies- I only have one pair and they suck! With everyone coming, we'll more than likely need multiple pairs. That goes for regular scissors we well. The mesh material came in yesterday so I've got that and the zip ties covered. Clark, I saw that skimmer in action at John's house...it seemed sporadic in it's foam head at times. I have a suggestion that might really improve it's performance for you and it won't cost too much:

I think there is a lot of turbulence for some reason on that skimmer that creates inconsistency. I think the easy solution to try would be to put a 1/4" acrylic plate with a bunch of holes drilled in it to put at the base of the skimmer. This would act as a diffuster plate and would stabilize the foam head, I think.

stlouisguy
12/22/2006, 07:54 PM
Dave, do you mean right over the inlet tubes or higher up in the skimmer itself. It skims very very well but its a ***** to keep adjusted.

Would I just get a piece of acrylic drill it full of holes and seal it along the edges?

Thanks

Nanook
12/22/2006, 07:57 PM
I think the lower the plate can go in the skimmer, the better it will perform. You could email or PM Geo and tell him what is going on and he might be able to advise you better since he built it...I imagine he could to the plate for you as well.
