I have always cycled to old fashion way. Hardy damels and then eviction. I want to try using cocktail shrimp. How many for a 150 and when is it removed? Also, is lighting required?

One small shrimp left to completely decompose is all it takes.

but first...are you using live rock? If not....then yes do the shrimp. But if you're using live rock, the rock will cycle on its own (you dont cycle the tank...you cycle the bacteria on the rock...if no rock, you cycle either the bioballs or the media in whatever filter you use).

no rock = yes shrimp

rock = no shrimp :)

I prefer to feed small amounts of fish food daily during cycling.

Just p/u 40 lbs of uncured LR., but I hate to smell all that decaying in the house. I put in 1 10 lb. piece and I'm curing the rest in the garage. Still use a shrimp? Also, should the skimmmer be on?

dont use the shrimp if you've already got live rock...it'll just add unnessesary amonia
