I'm getting to the last stages of setting up my 180gal + 25 sump/ refug. mixed reef, which will have mostly softies and LPS with a few easy SPS. My goal is to get water flow in the 20-30X range and have the powerheads alternate for wavemaking. I plan on buying an Eheim 1262 pump for the sump return and am considering what the powerhead options would be best. My ideas are:
1. 2-3 Nanostream 6045s. One on each end of the tank and one in the middle. I like the design and ability to direct flow. I'm not sure if they're enough flow for this size tank.
2. 2-3 MJ1200 modified. Functional yes, aesthetic, no.
3. 2 or more Nanostream 6055 on a wavemaker controller. This seems pretty expensive but I'd rather spend $$$ now than having to buy a 2nd time around.

I'll be using a Reefkeeper to control the 3 powerheads, however am considering if going the Tunze Nano 6055s w/ a wavemaker is really the best way to go to get enough flow. It seems hard spend the $500-600 or so extra for this route, unless it's the best long-term approach.

Thoughts on using the tunnze 6055 w/ wavemaker compared to other powerhead configurations for a sucessful 180 mixed reef?

that is a lot of flow going through a 25 gallon sump, is that sump volume or sump size?

A pair of 6100s and a 7095 controller.

How about a wavebox ? I believe that would work for the corals that you want.

I 2nd the 6100's or 6000's as I think the nano's won't be enough.

Thanks for the recommendations!

The average Sump water volume is 25 gal, refug. water volume is 10 gal. Maybe I'll have to use Eheim 1260 instead of 1262 so it's not too much flow through sump/ refug.

Have you considered using a closed loop, to eliminate the powerheads in the tank. I use a Dolphin AMP Master 3000 and Sea Swirls on my 180 and like it much more than when I used powerheads and a controller.

A closed loop would probably be too much flow through my sump/ refug. so I figure having a couple powerheads will be an easy way to get the 25X flow.

Closed loops do not flow thru the sump, the supply line is plumbed directly to the pump and then returned to the tank. Do a search on R/C on closed loop designs, they are more reliable, put less heat in the tank, and are 'cleaner' looking, IMO. Let me know if you can't find a good thread on closed loops.
