"Eh...."

Well, sorry to bother you with my trivial suggestions. Didn't you ask for colorful? What do you consider colorful then?

I have a pair captive bred clowns, two lyretail anthias (one is changing to a male), yellow tang (I'm just healing him back up), and a mandarin.

Lots of orange in my tank.

when I think colorful I think scotts wrasse, exquisite wrasse, lubbocks wrasse, dispar or lyretail anthias, a blue flasher wrasse IF IT REALLY DOES look like the pic at marinedepotlive.com

what do you think about a dwarf angel? any you guys would recommend? i was thinking a flameback

all dwarf angels are at risk for nipping coral polyps. Sunburst athnia, midas blenny, even a blue chromies would be good. Also flashe wrasses are good choices too.

i can have another wrasse?

i would really like a tang, but i think a 58g is just way too small for one

Yes, a 58g would be too small the only exception to that rule would be if you are planning on upgrading to a larger tank within the next year.

all GRAZERS (angels/tangs/blennies/etc) are a risk for nipping.

im really looking at going with a coral beauty, flame or a flameback, what do you think i would have a better chance with? i know there is some risk but what do you think? elibi's look cool as well as rustys, i will get a dwarf angel just need help choosing one. bicolors and lemonpeels i believe will eat coral more than likely

It also depends on what type of corals you keep. I had mainly softies and zoas with my half black angel and he did not bother the coral. I then started adding LPS (hammer, plate, brain). As soon as I put the open brian in the tank the angel went crazy. I had to remove the angel before the brain was eaten. Personally I don't think angels are worth the risk. I will never get one again in a reef tank.

I think in a 58 you will have problems with an angel. They are grazers, as posted above, and in 58 gallons, things are going to get grazed constantly. The larger aquariums with bunches of corals can get away with pygmy angels because they will nip a coral and move on and probably wont nip the same coral twice in one day.

For fish in a 58, I would try a flame hawk, pearly jawfish, true percs, blackcap basslet, neon gobys, maybe one anthias.

A purple tang in a 58 is too small IMO. I have one in my 90 and that is probably the smallest tank size you can go. RichConley , you are stocked to the max brother.

what do you think about a kole?

hgbarwick
12/19/2006, 06:22 PM
still to small. Koles are the tangs that are best suited to smaller tanks but I would say 75 gallon minimum. Unless you are upgrading in about a year no tangs in a 58 Gallon. Their are plenty of other good fish. A yellow watchman goby/ pistol shrimp combo is really cool.

already have a yellow watchman, im probably going to go with a coral beauty

no dwarf angel ive decided, love my corals too much. my wrasse died today, no idea why, heres my new list........

(Pair) Tomato Clowns
1 Melanurus Wrasse

cant really decide on what else i want to add, was thinking of a copperband butterfly? i will make sure it eats before i get it, not sure if my tank is big enough, but ive seen lots of people with them in 50 and 65's. i really like these guys

Long-term, the copperband IMO would be difficult ... and IMO like grazers [esp larger, like dwarf angels] may get nippy with a small territory.
Heck, my Midas got nippy at the clam after a year or so.

I'm much less stocked than Rich, but quite happy with the color + movement [also, the fathead is out all the time with less fish].
I've got a Sunburst Anthias, female Exquisite wrasse, tail-spot blenny, 2 masked gobies, 1 green clown goby. Will likely add one yellow [so-called coris] wrasse, likely a male exquisite ... though happy with current fish-load.

hmm, im really thinking about a Disbar Anthias, what ya think? i also want a some blue and yellow in my tank, need suggestions, and no damsels!

Do they do well in small groups?
Seems like a number of Anthias want lots of swimming space + do best in groups [Sunburst is a rare one that doesn't]. Then again, maybe I'm mistaken.

hey rich, how can you have all those fish in a 58. You may need to go over your stock list for the health and happiness of your fish. I would keep the perc's, potters and hawk.
