I know a number of people here have 58g Oceanics. I am trying to pick out a lighting system for the tank. The dimensions are 36x18x21h. I am currently looking into the new outer orbit systems from current usa. This fixture comes ith 2 10k 150-watt halides and 4 actinic 420/460 39-watt t5 fixtures with lunar lights. I am curious if anyone has this system and what they think about it. Would 150 watt halides be enough for a tank that is 21 inches high? I am interested in keeping lps and a few sps to begin with, but do not want to be limited. I also would like to keep an easier clam. Any suggestions?

if you don't want a canopy with retro, then that unit or a SunPod would work great.
The 2x150W will let you keep anything you want as long as water is kept clean and correct placement of coral is done.

I actually use a 2x150W SunPod with Phoenix 14K's on my 58g with a couple LPS and mostly SPS

I have a 58 too, with the same dilemma, I think that I'll go with either a single 250 watt MH pendent, that has 2 28 watt PCs. Or I have a dual 175 watt MH system but no reflectors which I think I’ll get lumenarc Minis for with T5 or VHO supplement. I will have to build a canopy for it thou. I'm a little worried about heat issues, what do you guys think?

a fan will take care of any heat from only 250 or 350 watts of mh....

fans blowing right below the halide bulbs will take care of the heat, but you will get alot of evaportation. I get about a gallon a day with mine running the fan over the water 24/7.

two 150w will work but 250's would be ideal. I have a single 400w on mine but you do need a good reflector or do your rockwork around the light to get enough light on the sides with a single bulb.

and no I dont run a chiller, and my temps stay around 82-83 in summer.

I was happy with a 250W pendant over mine. Pretty good light spread, and I never had heat issues. Evaporation is good, lets you add more kalkwasser!
