View Full Version : ASM Recirc mod - Is it really worth it?

I'm thinking about modding my G-2. I will use the Sedra 3500 to "recirc" the bubbles in the skimmer and a smaller Sedra 2500 with venturi to feed the skimmer. So basically there will be two Sedra pumps providing the air bubbles. Has anyone tried this? Will this mod really increase the skimmate production?

TIA ;)

I think you should have the 2500 as the recri and the 3500 as feed pump.

I done G-5/G-6 mod but never G-2

I have a g3 and thought it sucked compared to the etss skimmers I always used.
I can't believe people like these.anyway I was sick of the minor skimming and decided to try the mods.
the gatevalve mod to me just took extra space.I saw no diferrence.I went back to stand pipe.
Then I did the recirc mod and drain it from the tank instead of feed pump.
Made a huge difference. So many more bubbles and you can hear the air intake taking in way more air than before.
It is definately worth the cost of two uniseals($10) for the better skimming.
I still like downdraft better though!!

Until you get a better performing skimmer.

Sell the 2500 and direct feed from the overflow........it makes a big difference. If not the overflow, use a MJ900 or MJ1200.

Thanks for the responses everyone! How exactly do you feed the skimmer from the overflow? Drill another hole on the skimmer body and just direct the overflow through the hole and into the reaction chamber? How does it work exactly?

TIA

That's exactly it. No need to use another pump, let gravity do the work, plus you'll be getting the dirtiest water possible.

While you're at it, throw a meshwheel on the 3500, and it'll pull a lot more air.

What size hole?

Meshwheel? I saw a picture of the mod, but do I really need to shave off all the pins on the needle wheel disk? Can I use several sheets of Gutter Guard instead of 3M scrubber material like someone did?

look in this forum under "asm skimmer club" for the mesh mod.
I am not going to do it because I don't want to ruin a $30 impeller.
but the recirc is a definate you should do.

Use the Enkamat material if you can get some. Its much better than the other two options.

You can get a GenX 2400 for about $30. Sell off the Sedra, and buy one of these, if you dont feel comfortable chopping up the impellar. You dont even need to buy one with a NW on it.

You're not willing to ruin a $30 impellar, even if it'll make your skimmer draw literally 2-3 times as much air? It'll work MUCH better.

And seriously, theres way more risk recircing one of these thigns than meshmodding.

Genx2400? Is it better because of the higher gph rating?

What is the reason for cutting off the pins? Wouldn't these pins hold the material down better?
