Recently got a used 30 gallon saltwater set up

twin tube 10,000k and actinic lighting
a jebo 200 watt heater

I also recieved a large marine land skimmer

all looks good, the skimmer is just salt encrusted

But how does it work, not familiar with skimmers,
it is a hang on back,

do i simply submerge the pump, with the sponge and plug it in. or do i need to add water to the Skimmer to start it up?

Can you post a picture, or give a model name? You probably just need to hang it on the tank with the pump in the water.

can't seem to find the name of the actual skimmer, but it is actually a Aquarim Systems manufactured

A SEA CLONE 150!

All you should need to do is hang the skimmer on the tank, with the pump in the water, and turn it on.

That skimmer doesn't get particularly good reviews, FWIW.

would that be an ok skimmer for now, or do i need to change it

what is a good skimmer, but less pricy

IMO...it'll work fine for your 30G...
Its just a little finicky....
you can call the tech line 1-800-822-1100 for a copy of owners manual....hook it up, and the pump will take care of it...
you can use in sumpo aswell .....FWIW.....

I have a CoraLife SuperSkimmer, and it seems okay. The reviews I've said indicate that the CoraLife should outperform the SeaClone, but there's no objective data available.

Whether you need to replace your skimmer depends on a lot of factors: bioload, animals kept, etc.

well as for bioload,
talkin 30lbs live rock
2 ocellaris
1 royal Gramma
1 orange firefish
1 cherb pygmy angel

some turbo snails,
hermit crabs

Thats it

Since you're not keeping corals, I wouldn't worry all that much. I would be sure to do water changes, though. Maybe 2 10% changes per month or so.

That's a lot of fish for that size tank, though, in my opinion.

maybe i'll stick with one clown,

i'm pretty diligent with water changes, especially with my africans, 20% a week, and fry are 10% every 2 days,

so i'll prob do 10% every week, is that too frequent? what fish do you reccomend

10% a week is very good. I am too lazy to do that. :)

I'd cut the list back to three fish, and see how that goes. I don't see much problem with the fish you've chosen, just the number, although I don't know much about the cherub angels.
