A few questions.

What exactly is the purpose of the refuge aquarium?

Is it to grow algea that removes nitrates, phosphates, etc out of the water?

Is green hair algae considered a good macro algae to have in your refuge tank?

What or how would you recommend setting up a refuge when I have 55 gal tank this is not reef ready? I have 2 Bak-Pak filters that hang on the side to do my skimming?

Dual purpose, to reduce nitrates & phosphates.As well as to grow pods in. Not really, your first choice should be chaetomorpha algae.If you have room under your tank, go with an over-flow box and plumb to your sump/refuge. A lot of examples out there.
