Quarantine (my opinion)

Posted 03/09/2011 at 08:40 PM by snorvich (System configuration and fish for my two tanks)
Updated 03/18/2014 at 09:39 AM by snorvich

Q: Should I quarantine all fish?

A: Yes. Four weeks is a good window for observation of disease and parasites. All newly acquired fish will benefit from 4 weeks of time by themselves in the quarantine tank to recover from shipping/handling stress and to acclimate to your feeding regime.

Q: What about corals, inverts, algae, and live rock?

A: Whle I feel that the risk is very low unless they are coming from an infected tank, you can set up a separate QT...

My Reidi Seahorse System

Posted 12/25/2011 at 07:07 PM by euromomtx

Last Christmas I gave you my heart... actually I am lying now. Somebody gave me seahorses last Christmas and I gave them 150 bucks.
I did fall in love with seahorses at that time though!
The seahorses arrived with a 29 gallon hexagon tank that quickly sprung a leak!
This was of course a great reason to upgrade to a better/bigger tank.
Texas Tropical in San Antonio ordered a custom made Marineland 60 gallon cube for me. I wanted a corner overflow rather than the standard...

Building Debt With a Basement

Posted 12/27/2011 at 04:40 PM by speedpacer
Updated 05/13/2012 at 12:14 PM by speedpacer

Anyone who's been in this hobby for a while knows that a basement set-up is the way to go if you have one, and up until just recently, I was among the many who wished they had one.

Well, thanks to the combination of a marriage and a recent non-traveling job offer that landed me here in the Rocket City, I now have one! Plus, I have enough time and a little extra money to invest in such a set-up and finally have that big beautiful SPS dominant coral reef tank in my living room that...

Understanding damsels: chromis, clowns, and others

Posted 04/14/2012 at 06:12 PM by Sk8r

Understanding damsels, chromis, clowns...
These are the professional 'little guys' of the reef.
They require much more space than people realize: 100 gallons is good...for most.
They're also good 'dither fish,' who reassure other fish the coast is clear.

You can see dozens of them about a reef. Let a predator swim by and---boink!---if you blinked you missed it. They've all vanished.

WHere? Each fish individually has a tiny hole somewhere in the...

LEDs and PAR/Quantum Meters Part 2: PAR

Posted 05/02/2012 at 09:06 AM by GeorgeMonnatJr
Updated 05/02/2012 at 11:52 AM by GeorgeMonnatJr

This is the middle part of my experiences so far with reef aquarium lighting continuing from my general thoughts on technologies (Part 1) with the end goal of how I measured my LEDs (Part 3).

As before, this blog is as much a place for me to keep my thoughts straight and engender discussion and something to refer to instead of retyping the same material a lot as it is a place to share information.

I'm not even close to being an expert on reef tanks, yet (maybe in a...
