Many, many curse words

Posted 11/01/2012 at 04:41 PM by ACBlinky

I tell my son that reading is fun, but the reading I did last night wasn't fun at all. I love identifying all the things that pop up out of live rock as time goes by, and identifying algae is always interesting... unless you discover, as I did last night, that you've been plagued with Bryopsis.

I read hundreds of posts about this stuff and all I got was confused. Sea hares, rabbitfish, tangs, turbo snails, manual removal, nutrient starvation... everyone uses a different method (or...

Oh, the algae!

I had no idea this tank was going to speed through the cycling process the way it has. I'm wondering if, because it was a seasoned African cichlid tank and got added buffer and salts, maybe it was somehow primed to become a SW tank? We're using the same lace rock (with added live rock), the same sand (heavily vacuumed but not rinsed), and I wonder if there weren't already some bacteria just waiting for ideal conditions. Adding LR that had been sitting in an undisturbed tank for months seems to have...

Not surprisingly, because I'm so excited to be back in the SW game, I've been staring at the tank a lot. I'm seeing more life every day.

There are definitely some zoanthids on one of the pieces of rubble -- they must have been very stressed living in a dark rubble bin, but now that they're in the light with good flow, they seem to be recovering. Two of them are beginning to open up, and there are a number that are still tightly closed but look a bit larger than they did.

A successful day!

Today I went to the LFS, and really lucked out. They had a tank full of gorgeous, FULLY cured live rock -- I guess there's not much call for LR lately, because these stunning pieces had been there for over two months. I found some coral skeletons in the rubble bin, so I bought those as well. Why not, they're really very pretty!

I brought the rock home and did my best with the aquascaping. It's a little less minimalist than I envisioned initially, but I think it's going to make a great...
