300 DD Build

So I started a thread a while back about my build but have decided to start a new one because:
1. I did a bad job uploading pics.
2. It's titled 210 reef and I'm building a 300 gallon.
3. It was a very slow start.
Soo... here we go for round 2.

Here's a pic of the tank in the store

Loaded in the truck. Wasn't as heavy as I thought. 4 guys handled it pretty easily.

I'm on my way home with it now. I'll keep you guys updated.

Liam

Reefer1991 11/05/2017 12:41 PM

And again pictures aren't showing up. I am posting a link from flickr using the yellow mountain icon in the editor. Can somebody tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Liam

iced98lx 11/05/2017 02:05 PM

hey Liam, once you've got it on flikr open the photo and hit the little arrow to the right of the mountain:

https://content.screencast.com/users...2017-14.03.png

then select "BBCode" and choose the size, clicking the text will copy it to the clipboard so you can just quickly paste it in your thread:

https://content.screencast.com/users...2017-14.03.png

Luckily editing is open right now so you can add your photos back to your first post on this thread!

Thanks for taking the time to walk me through it. I finally got it figured out! Haha I appreciate it.

Some pics of the tank during the move. It was a lot harder carrying this thing once it was on its side.

Built a stand for the sump since the floor was unlevel. Used some 2x4s and plywood.

The room directly next to it is where I have my qt, rodi, and other equipment. I still need to go out and buy another brute trashcan to finish the mixing station.

Thanks! Im glad I called them otherwise i would still be waiting for the other store to order me one.

Tanks about halfway full. A booster pump is definitely next on my list because this Rodi is terribly slow.

I am using durso overflows with 2 emergency backups..... returns are running over the side of the tank. I understand a lot of people have issues with dursos but I've never had any problems, but Ive also never run this much flow, so we'll see how it goes.

I had a tough time hard plumbing the return(laguna maxflo 2400) but I figured something out. It definitely doesn't look the best, and the pump sits at an angle when every things connected but it should work. May be temporary.

I forgot a few fittings so I'll have to run to home depot after work to finish it up.

I am setting up the exact same tank next week. Have all my equipment ready to go! Are you planning on adding the salt directly to the tank to mix? I was thinking of doing this to make things easier

Awesome, you already have the tank? It's pretty sweet.

Yea I already have the tank half full with rodi. I'll test all the plumbing once its full then add the salt.

Reefer1991 11/08/2017 09:24 AM

Finished up the plumbing lastnight

Yeah I already have the tank and all my equipment. All my livestock from my old 90g is in a holding tank. Just waiting to pick up the custom stand next week and then I can get rolling.

Why did you decide to use all 4 holes as drains and have the returns come over the top?

Haha I had a 90 previously also. Everything's in a 37g and some Rubbermaids for now.

Two of the holes in the tank are for the main drain while I used the other two for emergency backups. If anything every clogs my mainline, it won't flood my floor because I have them.

That's a great spot for a tank with that depth.

Nice build!

Benson0219 11/10/2017 01:17 PM

This setup is looking good!!!

rocsec1 11/11/2017 07:18 AM

Looks great. I’ve gone from a 35 gallon to a 75 gallon and now on 120with a 40breed for the sump with another 40forma frag tank. I’ve been running this for a year and am already wish I had done a 180 instead of the 120. I really like the size of your tank. I see another upgrade in the future.

Jeramirez85 11/12/2017 01:18 AM

Great booking setup so far. Looking forward t it being filled up

I was originally going to get a 210 but figured id want to go bigger eventually so why not just do it now..... now here i am:spin1:

Ive got the main tank full and im working on filling the sump. I ran out of Di resin the other day so I had to wait for that to show up to continue.

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4553/...42b735c5_c.jpg20171112_075425 by ldubz123, on Flickr

I also noticed some air bubbles in the right seam near the top that appeared once the tank was practically full. My 90g had these bubbles so im not too worried, but now we're talking 300 gallons of water and also a lot more money into the tank so i'm a little frustrated. Ill write it off for now and keep an eye on it.

I went to order sand (reef flakes and miniflakes) and my card got declined. Turns out my account got hacked so now I need to wait for my new card to arrive in the mail to place the order.

Ill post some updates when I get my card and can actually continue with the build:lmao:

Following alond too. Love the tank location and the accent wall paint behind it.

I just did a 220 build and went with the Reef Flakes too. Best sand I have ever had. You will love it.

That's good to hear about the sand. Can't wait to see what it looks like in the tank.

Finally got the tank full.
I made a mistake and used loc-line on the return on the outside of the tank. It was my understanding that they were water-tight but i learned the hard way that they aren't. I'll have to replumb the end, no big deal.

The return pushes a massive amount of water! Sump is pretty loud because of it but hopefully once I get the stand faced off it won't be as bad.

McPuff 11/13/2017 08:31 AM

Just curious if you're going to run the sump that full... and if so, can it handle the back-flow from the display when your return pump is off? There really isn't much room to spare in it now.

Yea plenty of room. I only have the return outlet about a half inch under water so it won't siphon much. I have probably 5-10 gallons to spare after the siphon.

Reefer1991 11/13/2017 09:54 AM

Here's a picture of the room before I revamped it.(ignore the bad drawing, used this when I was deciding where to put the tank)

Got the rock and sand in early this morning. I'm not too sure how i feel about the scape. I might play around with it a little more. On the other hand reef flakes is definitely the best sand I've used hands down.

[IMG]https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4559/...e0e1b40b_c.jpg20171122_204615 by ldubz123, on Flickr[/IMG]

I need to play with the water level for the skimmer to tune it in right.

Just tagging along. I had a big tank before and my crazy ex wife made me get rid of it after a horrible tank crashing ice storm. I currently have a 110 but I’ve been thinking about the 300dd as well. Those bubbles in the seam concern me because these tanks have a history of leaking. I’m not talking bad about your build at all, just concerned for your safety. I’ll be tagging along to see your progress. Good luck and can’t wait to see how awesome it looks when finished

I'm not too concerned. I did notice that I can see the thickness of the side panel through the seam of silicone almost like it's a real thin coat.(about 4 inches of the seam on the top right). Most of the bubbles dissipated later in the day after I posted the pics. There's still a couple, but my 90g had bubbles that looked the same but had even more and they went away also. Most of the leaks that i have seen in the 300dds were in the bottom seam. A couple were in the side seam but it happened to the same person twice so that makes me think maybe their stand wasnt coplanar? I'll keep an eye on it and hope. You got me worried again haha.
