Bubble in my hammer, got a pic

This has got to be bad right?

Searched WWM without any luck. It has definitely gotten bigger, the coral seems to be doing fine however. Has been in the tank for several months now. How can I get rid of this?

DrReefer 01/08/2009 08:37 PM

Is it possible that the coral is splitting? My frogspawn usually get puffy around the mouth before they split. It appears healthy otherwise.

Don't think so, but I could be wrong. I've never seen this before, but I don't have a whole lot of experience with them either.

Dustin2 01/08/2009 08:50 PM

to me it looks like it is spliting this is what many of my lps corals do before splitting.

BuddhaKiss 01/08/2009 08:52 PM

agreed, my hammer and frogspawn do that from time to time

Mikeeal 01/08/2009 08:52 PM

REALLY?

This would be good news.

JEFFR259 01/08/2009 09:01 PM

yea, there was a thread on this same occurence a couple months ago. I believe the verdit was that it's a good sign and the coral is healthy :)

Mikeeal 01/08/2009 09:06 PM

Interesting, would you happen to have a link? I'd really appreciate it.

This is how my frogspawn splits. Has done it numerous times and has gone from 3 heads to about 15. It does take a while to finish though.

Looks like it is splitting to me as well. Mine has done the same thing when it has split.

This Platygyra sp. does something similar. The bubble basically 'pops' and leaves a bunch of little coral buds all over the tank. I've also seen the same thing happen with Euphyllia spp.. So, your coral probably just splitting/reproducing.

Awesome, thanks for the pics to confirm. Especially your frogspawn will16, that is exactly what mine looks like.

Thank you all.

I have a green open brain which has had a very large bubble in the center of it for probably a year or more. I'm hoping it will split as well. Mikeeal, I love your sig by the way, lol.

Eel-byte 01/10/2009 12:40 PM

My hammer has done the same thing in the past. I don't remember if I have any pics. I'll see what I can find.

Mikeeal 01/10/2009 08:25 PM

LOL, thanks Blazer.

I have a Fox coral that has had a large bubble on it for over a year now. It pops from time to time, but in a day or two it is inflated back up.

My hammer does the bubble thing constantly and expands amazingly fast, got almost to the size of a basketball before I fragged it.
