I personally would use the phosphorus ulr and alk. I use different brands for the other tests, based on reliability, ease of use and importance.

For phosphate, you want the ULR phosphorus tester (HI736). It tests in PPB vs PPM and it’s designed for ultra low range which is the phosphate range we target. While you do need to do some match to convert phosphorus PPB to phosphate PPM, it’s far more accurate than the standard phosphate tester (HI713).

I use the ULR phosphorus , it's really the only way to properly test phosphate levels easily. The rest are expensive for test/regent cost. I use Aquaforest Alk and the rest Red Sea.

I agree that the Phosphorus ULR and the alkalinity kits seem to get good reviews on average. The calcium meter seems more problematic, due to the dilution required. I don't think most of the others will work in saltwater.

Question on the ULR meter. If the regular phosphate meter goes down as far as .01 why the need for the ULR if optimal levels of PO4 .1?

I wouldn't say that we know of an optimal phosphate level. That might vary depending on the species in the system. I agree that the accuracy of the phosphate meter is poor at the low end. ±0.04 ppm is a bit wide as far as the range.

Because .01 on the standard one means you have greater than .05 ppm and probably closer to .10
I’ve done some side by side testing and the HI713 was reading 0 ppm while the HI736 ULR was reading .07ppm

The range we test in is ultra low range and the phosphate tester is a low range tester meaning the lower the Po4 levels, the less accurate is becomes. It has an accuracy of +- .04 ppm at low ranges which means at low range, it could be off by several PPM. Notice the “marine” designation on the HI736 ULR and the lack of it on the HI713 phosphate tester? The HI736 is the one that is ultimately designed for our use and what Hanna recommends for marine aquariums and why it has that nomenclature on the tester. At ultra low ranges, it can be off even more. If you want accurate phosphate test results, the ULR is the one you want.
