The 40 Breeder Project(Not Manhattan)
So, I have been working on my new tank for a little while now. Here is a rough sketch of what my first ideas were to do.
http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/f...1/NewTank1.jpg http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/f...1/NewTank2.jpg My plans have changed a little bit, but ony with the plumbing and some dimensions. Here is the start of the stand. http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/f...er1/stand4.jpg http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/f...er1/stand1.jpg http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/f...er1/stand3.jpg |
As you can see, the stand is built with 2x4s and being skinned with maple plywood.
Here it is a little further into the build. http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/f...1/DSC01720.jpg http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/f...1/DSC01722.jpg Here I finally have 3 of the 5 doors on it. I also started the framework for the canopy out of 1x4. Notice that I got the trim installed along the bottom of the stand. http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/f...1/DSC01743.jpg I got the main tank yesterday from the Petco $1 per gallon sale. The canopy fit like a glove. http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/f...1/DSC01744.jpg |
Today I decided that I needed to get the sump before the prices went back to normal. They didn't have a 30 Breeder in stock, so I went for another 40 Breeder.
http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/f...1/DSC01746.jpg http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/f...1/DSC01745.jpg The top of the stand is going to have a 6" shelf around it that is topped with ceramic tile. I am planning on running 2x250 MH with 2x39w T5 for Actinic. It should be a fun journey. I am just working as I go. Trying to make sure I don't spend too much at a time. The wife still has to pay the bills and all. If you have any suggestions, let me know. When I get the time, I will update how the plumbing will be. Thanks for looking, Joe. |
Looking good so far! I like custom built progress threads
i will keep an eye on this thread as it develops =) |
Thanks for looking! I wish I had the money to throw down and get it done. It probably wouldn't get done with as much quality and thought that way though.
|
Nice wood work! This should be a good'n!
|
I hope so. Some of my joints are questionable, but I will just cover them with some trim. :D

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/f...1/DSC01748.jpg There is nothing more fun than watching Silicone dry. I will have it mounted tomorrow. |
I've never seen someone use those triangular pieces to support the bottom like that. Good idea.
|
I was worried about how I had them cut the glass. All of the weight of the water is going to be coming down on that bottom piece. I wanted to do something to help support it. I had the extra glass because I got an extra bottom piece cut in case I cracked 1 drilling it. It came to mind after, but I am glad I did it. Tomorrow night, I am planning on cutting the weir, and getting the "box" mounted to the tank. I might get some PVC and start on some of the plumbing. I cant do most of it because I don't have the pumps. But I can at least do something.
Stay Tuned. |
I got everything cut and siliconed. I had a small snafu while going across the bottom of the weir. I tried to go too fast and took a small knick out of it. It will be ok though, I am going to have a piece of black acrylic covering the whole back so it will not be visable. Here are the pics.

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/f...1/DSC01756.jpg Here is is with the trim back on. I think it is going to work out awesome. |
Nice work, I love the 40 breeder
|
I love the dimensions too. I had never seen one until I went to a local guys house when I was starting my current tank. He turned me onto it. I can't wait until it is done. In about another month and a half, it should be up and running. I got some PVC parts to work on the manifold for the closed loop. I will work on that tonight and post some more pics. I do not want any powerheads in the tank. I think I should be successful by running 1500gph through the 6 outlets of the closed loop.
|
I really like the pictures and schematics
|
Here is some pics of the manifold system. It is just cut, not glued yet. I think it should be plenty of circulation for the tank. will also have a return from the sump.
http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/f...1/DSC01762.jpg http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/f...1/DSC01763.jpg http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/f...1/DSC01764.jpg http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/f...1/DSC01765.jpg That is probably the most work I will get done this week. Maybe a few little minor things, but I am once again, broke. This hobby makes sure of that though, right? |
Im liking this setup alot!! Is it going to be set up in a peninsula style in the house?
Ill like it even more ;) |
nice start, I'll tag along. I like your closed loop set up.
|
Yes, peninsula style it is. I just wish I could get it done. $$$ seems to always have a way of screwing stuff. Some complain that they have too much of it and that it is a burden. Maybe they should get into reef keeping. :D
|
I have put the tank on a little bit of a hold. A guy in the locak reef club wants me to build a canopy for him. That is what I have been doing all day. It will help fund this project though.
|
Sweet manifold! Hope to see a update soon with the extra cash!
|
Coming along great!...I'll be tagging along to see how your progress grows, Post more pics whenever you can!
|
tagging alon, looking good so far!
|
I haven't done anything else. This weekend I am planning on wrapping up the canopy for the other guy. So hopefully I can collect on that early in the week. I need to get some bulkheads and union fittings to do some more on the plumbing. On the 15th, I am gonna get another sheet of plywood so I can finish that portion of the build. I am also going to get most of the stuff for the shelf and maybe get that started. I am trying to figure out how I am going to plumb the return. I already have a lot going on back there. I might just go right over the middle of the overflow and into the tank with a 45*. We shall see. A lot of it has to wait until I get my pumps.
Thanks for tagging along guys. I can't wait to get it up and running! Good stuff takes time though. |
This should look great when finished. Your manifold system looks good. I love 40 breeders and I love peninsula tanks, so this one should be really cool.
