Daisy Coral

I have a daisy coral in my nano tank. I am pretty sure the polyps are slowly getting smaller. I feed it about twice aweek alternating between Marine Snow and Zooplynkton. I target feed with a feeding tube. I am running PC's in my nano and it is on the bottom on the sand. No other predators around. The depth is approximately 10-12 inches down in the tank. Any suggections? It is a beautiful piece of coral and I do not want to lose it. Suggestions please.

Daisy corals don't have a good survival rate in our tanks.

I also bought one a while back, and it slowly started to die.

I did some reading, and Eric Borneman says that we should not be keeping these corals in our tanks, since they never seem to make it. Every one that he has seen, is slowly on it's way out, and no one knows why.

Thanks, it is comforting to know that I get to watch one of my creatures slowly die and better yet vendors still sell them. Thanks much for the info I appreciate it.

What coral are you referring to? Daisy coral is a common name...could be many different things. Do you know the scientific name?

This is the one that slowly died in my tank. And it's the same one that Eric is talking about in his book.

Is this what you have?

huh? Since when are daisy polyps considered hard to keep? I think he meant "flowerpot" coral?

PoukieBear 03/05/2009 11:20 AM

Either way, Flowerpots are also hard to keep alive over the long term.

PoukieBear - that looks like clove polyps (Clavularia sp.) or pipe organ (Tubastrea musica) to me. Both of those are quite hardy corals. Flowerpot (Goniopora sp.) could also be called Daisy Coral...those are notoriously difficult, but not impossible to keep.
