Blue Spine Unicorn tang

Any one have one of these guys?Want to hear success stories or failures for that matter. I'm looking for a large show fish for my tank and am thinking about getting one of these guys. Blonde Naso was also a consideration but after failing with 2 in the past 5 or so years, I don't think I'm going to try another. ( Others have informed me I'm not alone in this) From what I read they are best purchased at 4"+ and once they acclimate they are very personable, not aggressive, and hardy.

They are hard to find as not a lot of demand for them. I found one locally in the 8-10" range but it had a damaged horm that led to an unrecoverable bacterial infection. DD just had a brevirostatus yesterday but I was too slow.

Doesn't seem to be much info on them. I know they aren't in high demand since they get nearly 2ft. They are beautiful as adults and would make a great conversation piece. Simon, if you want one from DD I can give you contact information to get you to the right people that can make that happen.

My buddy has one that he has had for years, it's a full grown adult that's a little skiddish but otherwise always comes out to eat when he feeds the tank for company. It also swims in the open as you would expect any other tang to do. It's also fairly peaceful in that it only gives the sailfin tang and bristletooth tang a brief chase every now and again.

I have a show size vlamangi tang which I think is very similar in behavior. They are constant swimmers and they never stop eating. Thanks

The Vlamingi is another awesome fish when they get large. Very docile and inquisitive, saw a 2ft one in a large tank in Florida 2 years ago. Beautiful fish

Anyone else?

Haffs09 11/19/2017 07:21 AM

Tagging along as I want to get one of these guys at some point too. I saw them snorkeling off Maui a number of years back, they are gorgeous!

Dmorty217 11/19/2017 01:17 PM

Well I'm getting one so I will update the thread after I get one. Apparently not many have this fish, which I get because of the size.

Picture!!!! :)

Dmorty217 11/20/2017 10:54 AM

After it comes in and assuming it eats/makes it through QT I will post some pictures.

nereefpat 11/20/2017 05:17 PM

Sorry we couldn't help. Way out of my size range.

I've seen unicorn tangs in public aquariums, but I'm not even sure if those are N. unicornis, N. annulatus, or something different.

Good luck.

The one that was on DD was N. Brevirostris, the blue unicorn (though not the same as the blue spine which is N. Unicornis). They both get large, but the Brevirostris is much more torpedo shaped as it grows. Either way, a very cool fish. DD picture was of a juvenile pre horn.

I assume this is N. brevirostris? If so, I can't wait to see a picture of this guy. I would buy one for sure if my tank was appropriately sized. Tempted to get another vlamingi but even that will outgrow my tank fairly quickly (300g). But I agree that when those species get large they are very cool and not something you usually see.

Yes this was a Brevitostis. I titled the thread blue spine because Liveaquaria seems to have them more often, or at least they have a "email me" section for them unlike the Brevirostris.

Just received a blue spine from DD today (N. Unicornis). About 4 - 4 1/2" long, pre horn juvenile. Looks to be in good shape.

pinnatus 01/03/2018 08:33 PM

Nice!

Dmorty217 01/03/2018 08:34 PM

Glad to here it arrived well. Let us know how QT goes

locito277 01/03/2018 09:28 PM

I have a Blue unicorn as well as a Vlamingi. They swim together now although they had a little shoving phase awhile back. Hope they stay peaceful. Naso is the king of my tank though amongst the tangs.

Wow, I didn't even check the site in the past couple weeks... very cool!

Locito, I didn't know you had one too. Sweet!

nereefpat 01/04/2018 08:53 AM

Awesome. Keep us updated. It should be easy getting it to eat, since it's from DD, right?

Yessir he’s my baby if he’s a he. His horn has grown since he’s been in my rank as well. They really don’t mess with anyone in my tank
