silicone turning pink !!!

hi !!!

we upgraded my sons little tank to another little but bigger tank :)
a 10 gal with a little live rock (4 lbs) will add more soon, sand bed 1",we have a hang on filter, heater and a single fluorencent strip for now...

will do a water test again but a few days ago thing were all in check.
seeded the new tank with some of his older sand, used the same rocks plus a little more and i have him doing water changes twice a week and use my DT water when i do my water changes..

all he has in there is a blue damsel, that teddy bear crab i fished out of my tank and i added a hermit to scavenge what ever is left over..

things that we will add soon are a smal skimmer, saw a cool little one at the lfs and some live rock.eventualy we will upgrade the lights to something interesting like t5s or led.

SO just noticed today that the silicone on the bottom corners near the sand bed is turning PINK ,like hot pink !!!!! the silicone is white/clear colour..

any idea what's this is ????

i have a few ideas but not sure !!
not enough circulation (i want to add a small pump)
sand bed not deep enough
not enough live rock

the pink is only showing up under the sand bed for now !!!
and not on the glass just the silicone..i will try to scrub it
and see what happens..

almost looks like mildew but super pinky !!!

The beginning of a Cyanobacteria outbreak?

that 's my first taught !!! but the pink is what has me and the fact that
it's under the surface !!! but you might be right..
i will keep a close eye on it to see if it spreads out onto the sand bed..

I haven't had pink, but one of my sump's silicone turn yellow after I first set it up, after a while it went away and it normal now.

Can sort of see it here,

Rhodotorula,

I had the same thing. Im guessing your tank is newly set-up?

Quoted from My buld thread from a different forum by QueensU

If the pink stains continue to spread, I would be almost willing to bet that its Rhodotorula. It's a yeast that is found in both freshwater and saltwater. It also has a very strong affinity for plastics. Likely why you're only seeing it on your vinyl tubing and cured silicone beads. Sometimes you'll see a pink tinge on the bottom of your shower when it needs to be cleaned, thats the same thing. It's generally non-pathogenic, it just grows there. It doesnt need light to live, and the reason it is only in your sump, is that it cannot tolerate the high intensity of light in your display tank. You could try an anti-fungal, or something like Pimafix. That might kill it off. (however, you might consider just leaving it, it does use nitrogen compounds at a higher rate than most other bacteria or fungi.)

Hope this helps!

ahhh yes there it is !!!

thanks acronics :)
that makes sense in all that is said, even the light part, we have low light, the day light spectrum fluorecent might just be enough to keep it under the sand bed and barely above it..

cools thanks for the info that was great
