LED lighting

Hello everyone. I have a question. Are Taotronics led fixtures good? I just bought 2 off ebay for $40 less each then from Amazon.com. I know they will be better then the shop light T8 I have now. Thanks

I have no personal experience with them but from what I have read they are on the cheaper side. Mainly good for soft coral tanks. IME, you get what you pay for...

ma87k5 04/19/2012 07:23 PM

Good because I'm not puting hard corals in my tank.

ma87k5 04/21/2012 08:26 AM

This is the same one from e-bay but alot less money.

That is classic. The image that they show at Amazon shows it lighting a tank with a few fish in it... kinda. It is actually shown lighting the aquarium screen saver on a computer! I guess we know it keeps computer fish and corals alive...

Well if it don't work for my tank then I just bought some expensive shop lights for my garage.

ReefingIt 04/22/2012 12:14 PM

You got pm'd.

I got the lights yesterday and installed them today. WOW what a difference. It actually looks like the sun is shinning on my tank. My Kenia trees are loving it. I'll give a weekly update as to how the light are doing with my current corals. Will get corals with color in them in 2 weeks and I'll update on those as well. So if these lights work like they say I will most definately give them praise. Time will tell.

Actually laughed out loud looking at the image...

First pic is with shop light and secong pic is with e-bay led. For now I only have 2 LED lights. I may get the 3rd one depending on how things grow. I know I need more live rock. But hopefully now I can start to get more stuff.

ma87k5 05/20/2012 07:33 AM

First update. Green algea is forming on the glass. Hard and crusty. And my Kenya trees have been shriveled up for 3 days now. I read somewhere that that might mean they will split. Other then brightness that's the only difference so far.

dattong 05/20/2012 07:46 AM

You should move you lights higher or move the Kenya trees to a less intense light spot. They shriveled up because you didn't acclimate your corals to the new lights.

gmate 05/20/2012 11:33 AM

Thanks for the update, keep them coming. I have been on the edge of purchasing these several times and need a make/break decision factor :D

ma87k5 05/21/2012 07:00 PM

Only one tree is shriveled and one is half shriveled. And one is open all the way. I think my main problem is that I'm not using RO water just tap. But I've been doing that since last year.

ma87k5 05/26/2012 07:02 PM

kenya trees are fine now just much fatter then before.

ma87k5 05/26/2012 07:05 PM

I just seen something weird in my tank. My coral banded shrimp just cleaned my pearl scale. Never seen that before. Was actually kind of cool.

gmate 05/26/2012 07:45 PM

Tao fixtures aren't dimmable, that's the only quarrel I would have with them.

ma87k5 05/28/2012 07:53 AM

Where can I find a PAR reader? I don't want to by one. Thanks

mtc1966 05/28/2012 08:05 AM

if you are a member of ctars they have one to lend out.

ma87k5 06/10/2012 08:07 AM

Well my Kenya trees have dropped babies.

and now your hatred for kenya trees begins

gmate 06/10/2012 02:43 PM

Any other updates or pics? It's been a month and a half - are you still seeing coral growth? Does your tank have just softies or do you have LPS and Stonies too? Thanks!
