I wish there was more available information on maxi-mini's. Most of the stuff I know is just from experience or learning from other reefer's experiences.

Sam, can you give me/us the name of the LFS that is your supplier?

mrbncal 02/01/2011 10:54 PM

Found this a few minutes ago. Would like to know where to find ones like these...

Reef Gardner in Florida has them, but they are not cheap!

I'd like to throw this out about common names. They've been called mini-maxi carpets for quite a while, but since the name is unwieldy, others are looking for something else to call them. Somehow, Stichodactyla tapetum doesn't seem to roll off the tongue very easily so the name pizza anemone has been tossed about. Sorry, but that name is taken by Cryptodendrum adhaesivum, and it is more appropriate since it has three types of tentacles, one of which is thicker and along the outer edge, resulting in a "pizza crust" shape to the anemones. They are also somewhat larger, more of a fish eater, and much more difficult to raise. Definitely a species tank kind of anemone, unlike our mini-maxi's!
Just saying.

I got to see the stinging power of my maxi last night. My largest anemone (4-5 inches) had one of my many serpent stars hanging out of it's mouth. These are the local kind that are about four inches arm to arm. I thought it was dead, but I saw that the two arms that were out of the mouth were trying to get away. Evetually the maxi won and took four of the five arms. After seeing that I see where a careless fish could get caught. Just thought it was interesting, and I'm glad I got to see it happen.

Sure, these are the places I have found them.

Tallahassee: High Tide

Pensacola: Innerarity Reefs, Reef Scapes, and Water World

None of them get them regularly, but if you check often you can usually find one or two hiding with the ricordia's :clown: I've found about half of mine that way.

I love that article! That's one of the best sources for info on these anemones. Reef Goddess (Morgan Mok) is one of the few people that is an expert on maxi-mini's.

And yes, pizza anemones are much different than maxi-mini's, pizza anemones will eat all your fish.

I just started collecting these. I have 5 of them already. There all over south florida LFS. Almost every one i stop in seems to have them now. Most of mine are about $25 but i have been looking for a bluish coloration on one, which seem to be much harder to find. I also like them because of how easily you can reproduce them (by cutting)

I'll play. I only have one but I'm looking for more... Pics from iPhone 4

I think Morgan got most of the info for her article on Reef Central! :wavehand:

do a search of the archives using Stichodactyla tapetum as the keyword

I bought them all for you, but sadly Santa disappeared with them... leaving a trail of wet footprints.

nam2212 12/13/2011 05:13 PM

How large are these typically? I have seen them at the LFS that are about the diameter of somewhere between a baseball and a softball. I got one with an online order but it was only the size of a quarter.

CJO 12/14/2011 08:42 AM

It sounds like you got a mini rather than a maxi mini.

I figured they were different. Thanks for the info. Mine looks a lot like a ricordia florida but is bright green and purple.

I found one that looks exactly like this one at Petco under some nasty lighting and conditions so I took a chance. I only paid $20 bucks for it because it was on special. HAHA Now it is bright looking like the one on the picture.

So where are they located. I would like to see if I could order some.

TULSATYE 12/16/2011 11:45 AM

Mine is about the size of a small saucer...about 7-8" in diameter!

*Late post. Here's mine not centered on the Mini but I wanted to share all the same. It's blue-greyish in color and has tripled since I purchased it. On another note this is the culprit for 2 emerald crabs, 2 porcelain crabs, and 1 peppermint shrimp going missing.
