Lionfish Venom question
 

I have several spot fin lions and one recently died from not eating and I couldn't find the body for a few days. Last night I saw the yellow tang picking off the remains of it. I know the venom is only in the spines, but will this affect the fish in anyway other than water quality issues?:mad2:

nope...the venom must be injected into the bloodstream/tissue.

Thanks for the response and the condolences. I have to say it was his own fault though. I have had him for a year and I have two others who acclimated very quickly to frozen and this one would only eat live ghosts and I just didn't have them readily available to keep him going. It is sad, but I tried everything to acclimate him to frozen he was just stubborn.

You mean that a fish that ate live food in the ocean where he was from died because you didn't make food he would eat readily available because it was an inconvenience? Totally his fault, darn fish and their stubbornness.

i guess the moral of the story is:

If you want a fish that accept frozen. have the lfs feed it for you to see. Most fishes that do not accept frozen at the store will not accept frozen.

My experience has been you have to add only weaned new fish into the established group of fish otherwise they will NOT successfully compete. I use the weaning basket concept (see here http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2002-11/fm/feature/ )

As for venom-- by definition venom must be injected into a tissue to work- lionfish are venomous fish, not poisonous. Poisons by definition are absorbed or ingested

Thanks Frank I had great success with the other two within a month, but this one was just the odd ball I guess. Thanks for the link I'll check it out. I didn't add him to an established community all fish in tank were added at the same time. Any thoughts on why the one was being stubborn. I thought maybe he'd learn from his friends, but no go

I never claimed to be the best fish keeper on the boards, but I do make sure to go out of my way in order to meet the needs of the fish I do have. I am glad that your other fish aren't as stubborn, and as such are very fat and healthy.
