My Tang Won't Eat Nori

I just put my first piece of Nori in for my blue hippo tang and foxface and neither of them are eating it. What's the deal?

UWUALineman 02/05/2011 01:24 PM

I have encountered this with quite a few of my tangs. My hippo didn't start picking at it till my pig for a yellow tang continuously ate it. My vampire tang I just got wants nothing to do with it. However, if you continue to offer it to them, I believe they will eventually eat it. And as with most tangs, it will become an important staple in their diet.

it took a full year before my hippo would even touch nori of any kind/color/flavor ect now my yellow tang nori makes up 99.99% of what he will eat since the day i got him about 14 months ago, my fox face chows down on it since day1, my sailfin tang eats it with gusto along with any food, my blonde naso will only eat it after the s/s puffer tears it off the clip and its free floating., my purple tang takes spurts with nori, some days thats all he will eat and some days he wont touch it or anywhere in between my scatt eats it ntil i feed the frozen foods for the day

so i listed 7 different fish that are known for eatin nori as a big part of thier diet so to speak and you have 7 completely different reactions for eating nori, of fish that are in my tanks at this moment so IMO it depends on the individal fish

It took mine several days to figure out it was food. Be patient.

My tangs were scared of the Nori and the seaweed clip for a few days. The blue tang first ate, then the yellow tang followed.

My tangs started out afraid of the clip too. I rubberbanded the Nori to a piece of rubble, and they started eating it. Now they'll take if off the clip and free floating.

Where did you get the nori? Is the stuff you buy in the LFS the same as the stuff you buy in the grocery store?

For most tangs yes, but a hippo is a zooplankton feeder. It eats algae yes, but don't forget it's meaty foods.

Try mixing a piece of Romaine Lettuce with a sheet of Nori.

retz75 02/05/2011 03:59 PM

My tangs only eat nori at night when the lights are off. It has been this way for about a year now.

JW3571 02/05/2011 06:32 PM

It says on the directions to take out any pieces that haven't been eaten in 24 hours. Is this true?

somethingphishy 02/05/2011 08:41 PM

try using the purple seaweed...ive found they like it better than nori....remove the uneaten so it does not contribute to nitrates

campos 02/05/2011 10:27 PM

my purple tang didn't touch the stuff for years until i introduced a powder blue tang who was quick to snack on the nori. Now its a competition to see who gets to it first. Its between my powder blue tang, purple tang, flame angel and midas blenny

I bought mine from an Asian market. I use the green stuff. I noticed the LFS has some different colors but at like 20x the cost.

This is also a technique used to get you to purchase more. I buy the large pack of green Nori from the oriental food store and cut it to refill my container.

robertifly 02/06/2011 12:07 AM

Mine were slow to start at first, then I switched brands and they wouldn't eat it for a couple of days, now everything in the tank stand in line and take turns at the clip.

Vang025 02/06/2011 12:21 AM

My hippo tang eats pretty much anything I throw in there. It eats them like crazy once he knows it's food.

maikoa02 02/06/2011 02:23 AM

Make sure that the nori isn't seasoned, give it time, and dispose of any uneatened.

JW3571 02/06/2011 09:38 PM

With a Hippo tang and a Foxface, how often would you put in nori? Every other day?

ace1352 02/06/2011 11:32 PM

i actually break mine up in the water so its a bunch of little pieces that way no one gets food envy!!!!
