Finger leather dying from the base
Hi all, my Neon Green (Australian) Sinularia is not looking good, seems to be dying from the base. It has already shed one finger.
Any suggestions how I should treat it? Should I slice the healthy two stems off and try to re-attach it? Thanks in advance, Brad https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d7f5fe163f.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...5c4a638b10.jpg Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
I think that I’d slice off at least 1 ‘healthy’ branch just in case it doesn’t recover, and maybe separate/remove the dying section

Necrosis perhaps? Like mentioned above you might want to save what you can and discard the rest. I have seen this just keep progressing though regardless. Even the healthy frags turned black over time. I just threw the whole coral away and moved on. Hopefully this won't be the case with yours. GL.

I'd suggest getting your algae problems under control.. Thats not helping at all..
Sometimes leather corals show some "rot" at the base then recover just fine.. Other times its best to just cut it off to save the top.. Its hard to give an answer as I don't know what that coral looked like before this started happening.. |
Mcgyvr, I agree regarding the Algae problems, and I have been bringing that under control for some time. Most of what you see is gradually melting away. My initial issue was high Phosphates, which I have now reduced, originally using Phos-Correx. I have now moved to Red Sea NoPoX. Currently Phosphates are ~0.02 ppm and Nitrates are between 4-10 ppm. I am targeting Phosphates ~0.01 ppm and Nitrates ~1 ppm for the moment.
Here is an earlier photo of the leather. In this photo the base is quite healthy and white. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...8594645016.jpg At this point I am going to remove the rear ‘arm’ as that is the most badly damaged. I will hold off on the remaining two for now and see how it goes, but may need to remove them also if the decay doesn’t stabilise. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
Hi all, the good news is that my Finger Leather is looking better now than it was, and when I got my hand in there and prodded the damage seemed more superficial than it originally looked. I took off the back head and again when I got it in the bucket it was healthier than I thought.
I ended up fragging three pieces, one large that I thought I may have to divide but didn’t, and two small. As this is my first time fragging anything it will be interesting to see how they go, particularly the mother. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...626372054d.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c9404d4f91.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d6b8fd1fe8.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...ed4154d20e.jpg Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
