1-1/2" deep (shallow) multi-gang electrical boxes WHERE?
Hey fellas,
Does anyone know of a manufacturer that makes multi-gang (2, 3 or 4 gang)electrical boxes that are 1.5" or less deep? I need them for a basement remodel. 1" furring strips are being used over a concrete wall with 1/2" drywall over that. I have some switches that needed mounted in them. I did find some 1-1/4" deep single gang boxes, but they're limited to only single gang. :( Thanks, Jason |
mcmaster-carr # 71695K12 ?
are you sure the 1" furring strip is really 1" thick? if not, you are going to have to think about something different for your boxes... wire mold perhaps? |
Hi Chrs,
Yes, it is 1" thick. Using left over 5/4" deckboards from another project. That item from Mcmaster car won't work because with the plate to mount the devices it is then over 1.5" thick. Anything else? Thanks, Jason |
i had a very similar problem, all i could find in a shallow box like that was single gang. I ended up cutting about 1/8" off the side of 2 boxes and glueing them together with pvc cement. It surprisingly worked out really well. I wish I had a picture to show you. I measured the distance between the mounting screws on a doubdle gang box, then measured to see how much i had to remove from the single boxes to make the distance between the mounting screws correct.

That's not a bad idea, but I don't like doing it ghetto in someone else's house (my parents). I'm sure I would do in my own house though. Surely not up to code though. ;)
Thanks for the idea, but I'm thinking that I'm just going to have to fur out the wall with 2x material and use a 1-7/8" or 2" box. |
yeah i'm pretty sure it doesn't meet any sort of codes. But i wasn't all that worried about it. I spent a long time looking for a double gang shallow box and then gave up. I put a recessed medcine cabinet in behind it and had very little room to work with. good luck.

I would call a few commercial supply houses.
Raco makes a 2 gang 1" deep box Part number 418 http://www.hubbellcatalog.com/raco/i...Boxes/0418.jpg http://www.hubbellcatalog.com/raco/r...325,11469,9118 Here are 1 5/8" deep boxes. They are made by ThePitt who was bought out by Cooper. http://www.foxelectricsupply.com/con...uctNo=CRHTP629 http://www.foxelectricsupply.com/con...uctNo=CRHTP631 |
take a regular double or triple gang, use a cutoff wheel on a dremel and cut off just the back panel, then cut the box to depth and reglue the back on, and drill holes for the incoming wires? how many boxes you planning on, if you are doing alot of wiring customizing them all might suck.

I'm pretty sure I've seen those shallow metal boxes at Lowes.
|
I'll look some more then. Thanks, Bean! :)

I couldn't find that at bLowes, Bean. I did find, however this Raco box (http://www.myproship.com/index.aspx?...=1&sku=6228373) at Lowes. It is exactly 1.5" inches deep, on the outside, and it is gangable, if that is the correct term. A screw comes off the side and the side comes off. Multiple boxes can then be attached to eachother. You can put as many together as you would like. The plaster ears come off too to make a standard box. They're $1.98 each. :)
Sweet! |
Cool... I thought those were 2" deep!

Bean is Omnipotent!
Seriously, though, Bean. Who are you? Where'd you come from? ;) |
A stork of course.

Try this its a 2 gang: UNION 4S-812C its 1 7/16 deep.
|
That would be a plastic nailon made by Thomas and Bettes. Good find sphinx. I look at the cooper or T&B catalog my yield more choices.... that is where a call to the local electric supply can help!
