Clowning_Around's Tank Journal thread.

So I've begun the journey of entering the fish aquariums again, specifically saltwater. I've recently purchased a 75 gallon tank and have just completed my do stand posted here:

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh....php?t=2638512

I've started some plumbing last night as well as a diy glass 20g sump tank yesterday that needs to cure for 72 hrs. I'll post some on that once I sort the photos. In the interim below is a photo of it's current state:

I've also begun planning my complete livestock list which I'll post in follow-up once I retrieve it from my notes.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...0a29a06575.jpg

My diy sump is complete and passed my chamber leak tests [emoji3] https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...37c4e020a8.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...5486ec50df.jpg

I used a 20gallon long from PetSmart, actually I used two of them. They had a 30%off your pick special so the tanks where a little over 20 a piece. I bought the second to harvest the glass to make my baffles which was alot less than what the glass shops around town wanted. Be warned though, if you borrow my idea it's a bit of extra effort.

I've been busy. I've made my own overflow with a weir PVC pipe. That was a fun little challenge to cut but I think it turned out great.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...af6d77ed06.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...6f433f07d5.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...6dd9328c94.jpg

Here's a few more pics of the progress inside my stand and my external plumbing complete, minus of course my loc-line sitting in the tank obviously :). I also added a mid rail support member for peace of mind for any outward load/ bowing forces and torsion resistance. Next up is cable management and my DIY skimmer.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...b5297b69ad.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...b0d26e33fd.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...2e42ebef91.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...628c9eef1d.jpg

Nice work on that overflow. Looks legit!

GFCI check, Leveling done also! Make leveling shims out of 1/8in alum plates and adhered them together and with the leg bottoms as needed. On a side note I decided against my diy skimmer and opted to order one it should be in next week. So now I get to start washing my pool filter sand and faux coral decor for my FO tank. I might even fill'er tonight and just start circulating the water. This is fun!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a0b45592b0.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...0c1f453b47.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...b46b6fde08.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...b5e7e68486.jpg

Was able to get a good deal on a used 40g breeder tank localy. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...7c484f2542.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...f2c155cbd7.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...6ea21921ce.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...3566310d90.jpg

I could be wrong but aren't those types of overflows notorious for failing? Nice build by the way.

Clowning_Around 07/24/2017 08:14 AM

Thankyou. I did the overflow without full due dilligence on my part. Its been up and running for 2 months now with no hickup and autorestarts like a champ. Still I dont have the warm and fuzzies about it escpecially long term once the inner slime builds as well as trapped gasses. So I am in the process of redoing my overflow as well, just been having to prioritize and await parts, etc. I will be doing a bean overflow with a full tank width weir.

Oh I see your going to change the overflow. The sump looks good.

ifarmer 07/27/2017 04:56 PM

Great start.
You might want to give your drain/overflow a second thought.
Its going to flood your house soon or later. I would be very caution about it.
I would look into getting a reliable overflow box or have the tank drill.
