Ecotech Coral glue is worthless

I bought this glue with high expectations and by far it has worst purchase in my brief reefing career. To be fair, it is actually less than worthless because 3 different times my coral frags fell to the sandbed and they are now trying to recover.
Shame on the big reef stores that continue to sell this garbage product. It is almost like it was NOT designed to work in saltwater.

I ended up buying some Loctite super-glue for a fraction of the cost ($3 vs. $20) and works so much better !

Bent 03/08/2018 05:10 PM

20.00 for glue?

That sounds about like ecotech.

Reef noob_ 03/08/2018 05:14 PM

I actually quite liked my CG. I got a free bottle as a sample a year or two back.

All super glue is going to have a hard time holding things in place unless there is a large bonding area. I use epoxy for any “sticks” as super glue in general never works for me.

Loc-tite gel and JB Water Weld. You can buy them both on Amazon or at Walmart and numerous other places and they work great together. Just put some superglue gel on the frag/frag plug, a ball of JB Water weld, then another dab of super glue, stick it where you want it to go and hold for 15-20 seconds.

Any thick/gel cyanoacrylate will do, the above is good stuff.

I've always prefered the eccotech...Like that its super thick...just find that once you open a bottle you need to use it all within a couple months

nikon187 03/08/2018 08:36 PM

yeah but the loc tight is .14oz or 4ml and the ecotech is 30ml so in equal ammounts $22 for the loc tight. we use ecotech for all our frags at the store and is by far the best holding one out there. ( ista, coralafix ect )

I find if u refrigerate it after opening it will last for a long time. I had that issue until I started putting it in the fridge. The bottle I’m using now I opened 7 or 8 months ago & I used it the other day & it is still fine.

I like the ecotech glue. I have tried others but prefer it over everything else. I find that it holds extremely well but it takes a little longer to get hard. So when mounting a frag u can just hold it for 10 seconds & let it go, u have to hold it for a couple minutes for it to get hard. It holds extremely well once hard though, I’m more likely to break a branch off a coral then to break the bond of the glue.

I thought it was great glue. The tube size was bigger too if I remember right, so it wasn't ridiculously overpriced. Yes there's cheaper glue out there that works great also, but I wouldn't let this devastate me

It's a large bottle. All these people out there messing with tiny tubes and getting glue all over their hands for the same price per overall amount.

The Ecotech Glue is great, not sure why the OP has such an issue using it but my guess is improper use. All super glue skins over once it gets wet. You have to twist it a little to break the surface and get it secure. It's also best for gluing frags to plugs, not frags to rocks underwater.

I literally buy 2 tube of super glue gel at the dollar store for a dollar a piece.... been using it for about 14 years never found a reason to spend any higher amount on any other glue.

This.

So much this.

I’ve been told I am a cheap skate.

YetiCrab 03/09/2018 06:59 AM

This works just fine...

I like the CG and prefer it over others. It's thick and plentiful.

eastlake 03/09/2018 07:21 AM

I didn't have great luck with it myself either. I mostly use the loctite gel and found a couple tubes of "surgical grade" super glue gel at the hardware that has worked really well to this point. But, were I in need of a larger tube of glue I'd probably go IC-gel, that's also worked pretty well for me and in these parts is $8 a tube.

Reefiez 03/09/2018 09:08 AM

for larger colonies, i go superglue, epoxy, superglue, works like a charm (sometimes) lol

d2mini 03/09/2018 09:20 AM

I've always liked it too.
And it's not very expensive when you consider how much you are getting compared to other thick gels.

BTW, the only time I use superglue exclusively on a frag is when attaching to a plug.
If attaching to a rock, I always use the superglue - epoxy - superglue sammich method.

Ooooh, that's a good tip. I stopped using the larger bottles because I ended up throwing most of it away. I use the individual size tubes, but that is less convenient.

MondoBongo 03/10/2018 08:33 AM

i've used the Ecotech CG before. i didn't hate it, it just seemed like every other super glu to me, but a bit more expensive.

what i really like are these:

https://www.amazon.com/Super-Glue-15.../dp/B000LGPD64

i use glu like once in a blue moon, and mine was always drying out. but i've found that those little tubes are usually just the perfect amount for 1 use, and the rest stay sealed until i need them.

rocsec1 03/10/2018 08:50 PM

Brs glue works well for me.
