Ok just read that Dowflake is NOT safe for aquarium use. They added something to deter against it.
What are people using these days?

Are you looking for calcium chloride or magnesium chloride?

fio1022 12/16/2012 12:52 PM

Calcium chloride

quagmire 12/16/2012 03:09 PM

Can't help you with the calcium sorry. I've been buying it from BRS. Wish i new where to find it locally also. Please let us know if you find a clean bulk source locally. I'll do the same.

For those interested in experimenting, Lowes in medford is carring 9lb juggs of prestone calcium chloride ice melt and 50lb bags of C-force calcium chloride ice melt.
Use the search function in the chemistry section of RC to familiarise yourself with alternative calcium chloride products. I can tell you from experience, don't use the ice melt with the dye in it.

The HD has the 50lb bags of C force also and it doesn't list ingrediants or state 100% calcium chloride....I don't trust it so I wouldn't use it.
