Awesome tank to model after.

You've got a great start on things! Keep up the good work, and keep us posted on the updates.

Sounds like a sweet build. Whats your coral stocking plan? Also, you probably wont be able to successfully run a biopellet reactor with a refugium. You arent going to put that beautiful clown tang in there?

Coral stocking will be primarily sps with zoas and chalices around the bases of the rockwork

Sps will be similar to what the iwagumi reef has. Any idea the name on the more thick stemmed stubby acros that he has?

Yeah, not real sure about running both.. I can always take the tlf offline if I need to.. Right now its only running about 5-10% of the biopellets it can take (handful). Wanted to start small on the pellets and work my way up..

I suppose I could run gfo instead but I don't seem to have any phostpate problems..

As to the clown tang, I'm extremely sad to say he has died. :sad1:

He "disapeared" in the evening 3 days before I switched tanks. Was in perfect health, ate like normal that morning, nothing abnormal was noted. No flashing, visiting the cleaner shrimp, etc.

No bones were found either :(

I will be getting a new one though! :D
I know i'll be pushing my luck but I really loved that fish..

The reason the naso is labeled temporary is because I'm waiting for the clown tang to come in, i'm hoping that by having a 7" naso in there when the new tang is introduced he wont' be as aggresive and will accept a lower place.

here's a pic under all blue leds. Comes out pretty blue!

please excuse the noise (grainyness), not really sure how that got there

tank

Nice tank !!!! seen it somewhere before LOL

Also where are the fish
????

naterealbig 03/31/2012 12:39 AM

Eric,

The tank looks outstanding! It's amazing how much better the tank looks with so little rock. It's open which will give plenty of room for the fish to swim and corals to grow, and it looks quite close to the real thing :) . As far as scaping goes, don't touch a thing. Post some pics when you get the lights fully running. Keep up the awesome work!

Mangodude 03/31/2012 02:31 PM

Another fts.. sorry for the weird colors.. the right side has only actinics right now till I get the replacement fixture.

Gives a much better idea of spacing

Very sad about the clown tang. They are so nice. Wish they were more able to adapt to our enviornments. My best reguards.

burnah 04/01/2012 07:06 AM

subscribed, want to see how this developes! nice idea, the original tank is awesome, hope yours gets into that direction too! greetings

naterealbig 04/01/2012 09:33 PM

Did you get those powerheads in yet?

yano 04/02/2012 12:34 PM

It's a real honor for me to know that the philosophy of my tank extends elsewhere.
I should warn you about the fish that grammas, wrasses and damsel is not good companions for smaller gobies (trimmas, eviotas, etc).

Thank you for the inspiration and the advice!

The fish you mentioned can be removed if they show signs of aggression. I am having a very hard time finding trimmas and eviotas at my lfs right now and I didn't want the tank to look empty. I will be checking with a local importer soon to see if they carry them.

yano 04/03/2012 02:00 AM

Ok, you will need patient...but they are awesome fishes.

Thanks! if you ever are in the area it would be an honor to have you stop by ;)

Were you able to set up your new tank?

Typlus5 04/10/2012 11:11 AM

No tank yet but have the plans and equipment laid out. I keep lurking here to stay aquatinted with the hobby but have too much going on right now to get started. I think I'll be building a 180 acrylic custom to fit an in-wall application.

whedbee 04/14/2012 04:57 PM

Hey Mangodude, was just curious how those led panels were working out for you. I was really impressed about the price : performance. Had a few questions if possible to help me plan my reef conversion.

How deep are you able to keep the sps and how high are the lights hanging above the tank?
Do you have any glass between the top of the water and the lights or is it open?
Do you think they would support a clam, and if so what depth?

Thanks!

Mangodude 04/30/2012 08:33 PM

Hey Whedbee, sps are doing good at 4 inches off the sand, lights are 4-5 inches off the water.. soo 2 ft?

its all open. I do have a middle section that has a 1/2" glass brace covering it (bout a foot wide?) and notice very little reduction in light penetration.

Clam would probably be fine in a 21" tank. i've never kept a clam so I can't say.. if you have a par meter you're welcome to come over and check the level if you want :)
