Remora

alprazo 09/04/2018 04:46 PM

Not a remora or dartfish.

alprazo 09/04/2018 05:10 PM

Hint. Pelagic and found in nearly all coastal tropical and temperate waters except the Eastern Pacific.

alprazo 09/05/2018 10:28 PM

Can grow to over 100 lbs.

That made me think of sport fish.

Cobia.

LobsterOfJustice 09/11/2018 02:55 PM

Cobia? Remora was my first guess as well.

Looking at Bob Fenner's site he got fooled thinking a cobia was a remora, so you have good company. The key is the structure of the dorsal fin, as the remora has a specialized structure for adhering to the underside of other animals.

Cobia it is. Good ID.

Interesting find in an LFS. Not a good candidate for any home aquarium lol.

I remember seeing Epinephelus lanceolatus "Bumblebee grouper" on DD a number of times. Those get even larger than the cobia, though they aren't pelagic. Not to say either are good candidates for most home aquariums. Then again, some of the builds I have seen on this site could probably support a pelagic 100lb fish.

My big tank is 2700 gal, so I have a larger home that could give me a couple of more years with this little one.
