splitting rics

What's a good way to get my rics to start splitting more often? I want my tank to be covered in them!!

You can spot feed them every other day with coral food as well as just making sure the have the proper water quality and lighting. No real way to make it happen over night. Rushing in reefing is a recipe for disaster.

I'll try that. I've had these rics for over a year and nothing yet :( Hopefully soon

I have some under T5 lighting (about 12" down) and the big one splits fairly often. I feed mysis shrimp fairly heavily and I've seen them grab one now and then. Good luck!

Rics are slow growers....ultra slow

One of my rics finally started growing a second mouth after TWO YEARS!! Thanks for the tips guys

You could try and cut them your self.

buck326 06/14/2012 12:27 PM

Make sure the water is good, feed the rics, and cut them through the center of the mouth. I was scared the first time I cut a ric but it works.

For my florida rics I wait for 2 mouths and then cut them in half. If you watch prop videos you can see them get cut into pieces and survive, I'm not that daring. Look in the propagation forum at one of the stickied threads, great prop info

Fastest and safest way is to feed wait for them to have two mouths and cut.

I'm sorry, but I disagree with "safest." Proper environment and water quality will allow them to split naturally which would be the safest way. A community member above stated something along the lines of "Rushing will result in disaster" that is a statement I whole heartedly believe. If you want more, buy more, if you aren't willing to wait and control the conditions of the aquaria properly so that they do so naturally.

Just IMO.

Yes, I agree with you that letting them be is the best and safest way, but what I meant to say is that the faster and safer way is to let the ric grow two mouths and then cutting it, instead of cutting the ric when it only has one mouth which has a higher risk of not making it.

I'm interested in knowing how the splitting goes. Keep the post updated please.

The split is going extremely slow!! One has 2 mouths and one has 4, but nothing else is really happening. I don't really want to cut them so I'm just gonna be patient and wait.

Good plan!

That's the way to go! :) You'll be much more pleased in the long run :)

I find it strange, though, after having these rics for 2 years, they never once split, but all of a sudden one has 4 mouths and one has 2. When one starts splitting, does that cause the other ones to start as well?
