Kessil AP 700 Owners Gather Here!

I just wanted a place where Kessil AP 700 owners could share their actual experiences with the light. I know the Kessil Club exists, but the AP 700 is a whole other beast when it comes to settings. I was interested in the color and intensity people are running their lights. Also shared experiences with the beta software.

I am trying to achieve good aesthetics and I was wondering what everyone runs their reds and greens at.

I run the fourth setting from the bottom on the color wheel (Kessil removed the numbers) and 35% red and green. The software limits the intensity to 70% when the reds and greens are utilized and I hope this is fixed. I don't have any red corals to compare how they look, but my red Earl's and flames really pop. Greens are also very vibrant.

So feel free to contribute to the AP 700 chatter! Lets keep the feedback on this thread from actual owners of the fixtures.

I don't own a kessil ap700 yet but I do want to upgrade to them eventually. I think that thread is a pretty good idea.

I've been running one for about 5 or 6 months now. Lighting a 48 x 21 x 21 tank. I need to have it 15 or 16 inches above to get full coverage. I get light spillage in the living room which the wife is complaining about.

Other things quickly
  • I don't mess with the blue or green channels.
  • When it's on the auto blue channels the colors pop for me.
  • The moonlight is too bright.
  • the iPad app was terrible, the new beta app is much better.

Confuse 06/21/2016 10:17 AM

Anyone else have any specific settings?

Tiansho 06/21/2016 10:26 AM

I run mine at 28 Max intensity for now. I was running a R420R before. Doing Acclimatization of my corals. I have had it for about 2 months. I like the new app for android. Way better than ipad app.

My lights turn on at noon and ramp up to 28% intensity by 2 PM.

Lights start ramping down at 7 pm, and off by 9 pm.

My Anemone is suffering a bit, because of the intensity of the light (I started it at 50%) because my corals came from LEDs already. I will have to move my anemone lower in the tank, she used to be at the top.

I currently own an 80 G 48x16x24 with 30G sump.

My lights are 10 in from water line.

rees2301 06/21/2016 11:48 AM

I've got 2 AP700's over my 72" x 28" x 26". Got them on the LeRusso mounts and about 9.5" above the water. I run one on 50% (Lps side) & the other 60% (Sps side). I am on the bluest deep ocean blue with 0% red & green. My tank is an upgrade an still fairly new. I think the Sps side needs increased intensity but don't at this stage want to promote algae growth. The Lps are doing great & the Sps are "holding in there" with colours ok but limited growth at the moment. I am struggling with the colour, the setting I'm on appears very dark but if turn the wheel one notch it appears to go very white. Certainly not really getting any pop with these lights. I'll give it a little longer before I up the intensity a bit & play a bit more with the colour. Moved to these from Pac Sun on previous tank and whilst the control is much better on these Kessils, the colour was way better on the PS's. With everything I read about the colour from Kessils I fear I must be doing something wrong. All ideas much appreciated.

I've been running my ap700 on a 4 ft rimless tank for 8 months now. I am 16" above water line and I ramp up to 80% for 3 hours. 12 hour photo period in total.
My some of my sps (acros) started to take off within the last month or so. I run my peak color directly in the blue at the halfway point. I don't mess with the Reds and greens at all. My only complaint is that I can't place sps anywhere I would like, but that was to be expected covering a 4' tank. I have a torch and a hammer that are near the edges of the tank and while they seem happy, growth has been minimal to non existent. I have contemplated added a second light but fear it is total overkill , as well as not wanting to mess with things since my sps is doing so well recently.

According to Red Sea - you aren't supposed to use red and green light spectrums in a reef aquarium - because they could cause algae and cyanobacteria.

bif24701 06/22/2016 03:30 PM

This is pretty close to what my peak is right now for 4 hours. Now it's the same only at 70% overall intensity. I don't see a need for higher just yet. I am getting great growth colors are ok but my water chemistry is set for growth for now not color.

This is my "blue" morning evening set up. I am considering pumping the up to 50% over all intensity.

hey guys, do you think that two is required for a 48 X 30? How is the coverage for a 48" length? THanks

This is what was recommended by Kessil for my 48x30x24 tank. The rep said to hang it perpendicular (front to back). I have two AP 700's on my tank and I think it's overkill. I think if you go with just one, you'll have to hang it higher. And if you have a canopy and are limited in height, you may have to use T5's to fill the gaps.

Can you post a pic? Thanks

I've had mixed experience with mine over the last 6 months, or so. Mostly probably due to operator error..so much so that I pulled the light off and put my 360s back on for a couple of months. I really haven't been happy until the new optics came out. I bought both sets of optics and run the minor right now. I had to bump the intensity from a peak of 40% to 90% to compensate for the optics.

My corals are pretty happy right now with the exception of my Duncan and a few shrooms. Looking forward to better firmware. The only major bug I see now is the left puck is a little brighter than the right one, but only seems like it's happening at rampdown.

I have the major diffusion lenses and like them. But did they really bring the PAR down so dramatically? I have to say I am getting good color from red corals which is something LEDs lack sometimes. The reds on my fish are really deep and almost glow. And best of all, no disco effect!

Salty150 06/25/2016 01:10 PM

How many AP 700 fixtures is everyone using on their 72" tanks?

According to Kessil:

Single AP700 Maximum Coverage:

• 36"x 24" at 7" above water level
• 48" x 24" at 18" above water level

So you would only need 2 for a typical 72" tank?

I'm seeing a 100 PAR drop with the minor optics.

I had 2 for a long while now. Added a 3rd and looks much better on a 300dd

ninjamyst 06/26/2016 07:33 AM

I am running the tablet android app so I dont have the red and green sliders. I want to get the optics too but they are so bulky and takes away from the aesthetic of the light over a rimless tank.

I don't even notice the optics, I'm running my AP700 over a Red Sea rimless. It's about 9 inches above the tank.

They are hardly noticeable at all.

I tried the android app on my tablet today, but I couldn't even work the color wheel. I guess it was designed for android phones and not so much tablets. But the iPhone app and the android app look practically the same.

How did you mount them? Front to back every 2 feet?

My reds also have great color and glow.

I have two and it is perfect coverage for my SPS tank. I measure over 200 PAR in each corner on the sand bed @ only 60%. My peak is not @ 75% for 4 hours. 7" about water. Two is plenty!

Depends on the tank. 72/30/30? 72/18/8?

I'll be starting with 2 on a 60/27/27 but I think I will end up with 3.
