What powerheads for a 75 gallon softie?
What powerheads can you guys recommend for a 75 gallon softie tank? Right now I have a sure flow mod with the 2100 gph prop I believe, on one side of the tank and two maxi jet 1200's in the bottom corners behind the live rock that are blowing all the debris to the front. I would like to upgrade my flow because there is still some bigger debris that accumulates in the front of the tank which the sureflow won't kick up to be sucked up by the overflow. I am also getting some debris accumulation on top of the live rock which I really don't want. What are some decent powerheads for around 50 bucks or less a piece that I you can recommend? And probably something that won't look big in a tank such as some koralias can. I have been looking around but a lot of powerheads have mixed reviews on various web sites. I couldn't seem to find a decent powerhead with mainly good reviews.

well depending on how many $50 powerheads you are going to buy, you could purchase a mp 10 with the money. Otherwise I would recomend the Koralias or tunze

Right now I have a 75g with two Koralia 1050 (evo). They were on sale for $30 at Marine Depot.
I am still a noob so dont take my word on it. However...I can say my softies seem happy. |
See now, I'm such a big fan of Koralias from a price/performance standpoint. If you're looking for something smaller, then what others have suggested....vortechs, tunzes....but they will cost you.
You can also just add a couple more Maxijets. They're great pumps, and they're fairly small. You can also add the sure flow mod to a maxi to make it perform more like a Koralia. |
I have a 75 with Koralia Evo 1400's setup on a wave timer. These are a HUGE improvement over the originals and can't recommend them enough.

The new evolutions are great I have three 1400's on my 125 and I have alot of flow I had 4 but the sand bed was kicking up to much and everyting was blowing sidewahys.

Agreed on the Koralias....Great powerheads for the money. I previously had 55 with two K2s and a K4 and they seemed happy with the right directions set up....

get somthing that osilates it makes the softies look realy nice and they like it

definitely go with the koralia evolutions, not the old koralia models (1, 2, 3, or 4). they are smaller, produce more flow, cheaper, and more energy efficient. great buys and only around $46 normal price at my LFS

i use the koralia 4s on my 120 they are awesome.i am also setting up a 75 and i am looking to get there new ones. two of the 1050 will do great

I use Hydor Koralia Evolution Pumps tied into basic timers. They are set at alternating times 4 times per day. I found them for less through Foster and Smith; keep an eye out for either free shipping or one flat shipping rate.
