Radion leds and clams????
My wife and I where at our LFS and she saw a clam (Tridacna crocea) and fell in love with it. My question has anyone had any luck with keeping clams using radions. If so how deep have you kept them. I know that the right lighting is hugh with keeping clams. Any help would be appreciated.

ange, where are you?
|
3 inches below the water surface right under the leds keeps my clams nice and happy

We have 3 Maximas between a foot and 18" from our Radions. Also have a Squamosa about 30" or so from them. All have been doing great.

Yes same as above!
Not sure who told you leds would not support clams. Cheap leds will not support anything but troublesome algie! "I used these first they suck" Radions kick *** on anything! Sorry pics but under a single radion 14 in from top of tank and 10 more to the clams on the bottom! They hit 51% max power output for about an hour. From ramp up to down! http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/a...d/DSC00635.jpg http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/a...d/DSC00614.jpg |
i have two crocea for a couple months now under 2 radions, hung 8-10 above the water clams on sand at 24 inches

Thank you to everyone who responded. Looks like the wife will be getting a clam this weekend. :celeb1:

2nd question... (sorry been in this hobby for a long time but have never owned a clam)
If im not mistaken a clam needs phytoplankton since its a filter feeder. Do I need to supplement this in my aquarium? Or might there be enough food in the water for the clam without adding anything. (125gal Display, but have roughly 275 gallons of water in system). If I do need to feed him phytoplankton how much such I start adding to the water??? Sorry for all the questions but thank you in adavance for any help |
They get most of their nutrition from photosynthesis. They still pick up phyto from the water column though. I phyto feed my clams. Here's a good study on phyto feedings and their effects on different types of juvenile clams.

don't bother feeding clams if you feed fish, unnecessary and it can overfeed the tank easily as well as harm the clam if done improperly.

I've got 4 clams, from 18" deep to about 5" deep. All have been under Radion's since October, current intensity is 70% over my 28g. Every one is happy and healthy, no complaints. http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...e/DSC_1095.jpg |
Nice looking 28g!
