Sand

I'm thinking I screwed up. I tore my tanks down because we moved from Ohio to Florida. I put my sand in buckets. I opened the buckets and it smelled bad. Will the sand be ok to use or should I plan on getting new sand?

Toss it -- not worth the potential problems.

Most people get new sand when they move tanks. Sand can become clogged with detritus and decaying organic matter very easily. When the sand is sitting still in the tank, this is often not a problem (unless it's really out of hand), but as soon as you move the sand, that gunk is all released and can cause major issues.

If you have lots of spare time and don't want to spend the money, you can rinse out the existing sand and re-use it.

In Fl you will be fine.

Here is Ca its hard to get aragonite sand, I would have rinsed and used it.

Being that sand can be easily removed if worst comes to worst I would just give it a good rinse first and then use it again. Don't forget the sand might not be the problem, the owner behind it could be mucking it all up... Just something to think about. LARS does exist... ;)
