Need some help with tank replacement
Hello All, I'm early in the process of replacing my 10+ year old 55g AGA tank with a 115g custom made from planet aquariums in Dallas (thanks to Custom Reef Creations). Anyway, while I'm taking the old 55g down, modifying my stand, and plumbing the new one I will be housing all my corals, fish and others in a 40g cubish tank with dimensions 23.5L x 18.5H x 21.5D. The problem is I don't have a spare light capable of keeping my sps alive. I was wondering if someone might lend me a light capable of doing so for around 1 month until I can get the new tank going. I understand its not a cheap piece of equipment so I am happy to do what ever it takes to convince the person I am trustworthy. I know a few people around the OKC and believe they may help vouch for me. If anyone might help, I am in Stillwater but will be down in the city this weekend and can surely pick the light up. I'm not picky, just need something with some punch to keep my sps doing well. Thanks

i don't have one to help you with but I can vouch for you being a great guy and someone I would like to help out if I could, if my old t8 bulb would work I would let you have it no questions but I know it wouldn't work for keeping anything alive. So I am no help there but if I see something local I will let you know.

Thanks for the kind words! I hope the skimmer starts producing for you, especially with remoras help. Like i said, its all about the community around you. I wouldnt be half as far in this hobby (most of us probably wouldnt) if not for the generosity of others. Without bobkill i wouldnt have this super cool derasa clam. Without Anthony and Bill at custom reef creations i wouldnt have much. I will not look forward to the day i have to move out of the area after i finish this blasted degree.

Well I have a friend in town who's buying a tank off me, and it has 3 Maxspect LED systems on it. (Each is about 24 inches). He's using two right now above his 120 gallon, and he may let you borrow the other for a frag or something ;) I'd have to ask. I'll be taking down my 120 soon (within two weeks I'm hoping), and then I'll have a 60" T5 setup you could borrow. That'd be longer than you need, but I'm just giving you options. :) I know very little about SPS corals and their lighting requirements, so forgive me if these are dumb suggestions. Just trying to help.
You know, you could always just GIVE those SPS over to a girl you recently met at Petco. Cough cough :-P |

What petco do you work at? I go to the one in norman on occasion. Sometimes the one on nw expressway. Just cyrious if I had met you before. Lol. |
No, she doesn't work at petco. I just met her and her husband at the location here in Stillwater this afternoon. They are pretty new to reefing but are going totally hard core.
What model maxpect fixtures are they? I would be very interested in borrowing one if it is powerful enough. I'm also talking to blakers82 about borrowing something from him but don't have anything battened down. Thanks to everyone for the support. |
Oh little Timidfish, you wish you had met me. I'm pretty entertaining, I must say ;) I'm far too good at what I do to work at Petco, but I'm there enough that they should start paying me for my presence. I'll run it by Leah, the manager, and I'll let you know how that idea pans out ;)
As for the lights, my 60 inch honker is a 320 watt t5 setup...brand new 80 watt ATI bulbs. I don't know a damn thing about the LEDs, other than the fact that they are Maxspect S...at least two years old. I can't find the model anywhere online, but it is the one that corresponds to this user manual (I believe): http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...45921128,d.aWM Sorry for the longass link, but my computer isn't downloading the manual for some reason, or letting me view it. I have looked at it before though, and I'm pretty sure that's the one. Again, I'd have to ask my friend if someone could borrow that, but I'm pretty good at smoozing people. I'm sure something could work :) By the way...why not just use your current lighting over the 40 cube? It'd be oddly shaped, like my 60 incher, but it would give you something to work with. Just a thought. |
Oh, and to add to this, I would seriously be willing to house some of your corals or fish if I needed to. (Not keep them, just babysit them) I have a 20 gallon quarantine tank with a couple fire shrimp in it, as well as a fully setup 38 gallon nuvo nano with thriving corals (two bartlett anthias there). I know you're an SPS guy, and I haven't stocked up on any of those yet. Soooo, the whole top level of the tank is free for the taking. And of course, I have my now-barren 120 gallon that I "stole" some corals from to fill my 38. I realize you don't know me well, but if you need someone to help you house some stuff for a bit, I'd be happy to. Already doing it for some frags for a friend after he had stray voltage in his tank :)

I could house any sps if needed

Thank you guys very much for all the offers of support. I'll be figuring out what I'm doing in the next few days. I don't get much time to work on the tank these days as my wife and I have a 10 week old baby boy.

Awwww, too cute! He looks like his daddy :) No worries about timing. Enjoy your new baby!

Looks just like you. Enjoy it. They grow up fast. My oldest I swear was just born yesterday and is 13 now.

He is a pretty cool thing. His mother and I are wondering what life was like without children.
bstubbz17, to answer your question about why I'm not using the lights I have; They are suspended from the ceiling and took sooooo long to get where I liked them that I will probably not touch them till we move out of the house, lol. I mean it took weeks to get them looking perfect, and the ceiling is almost 12 feet. Boo even for a person like me (6'4"). I'm super interested in borrowing the maxpect led's you offered. How difficult would it be to take a picture of them? Do you know how many diodes (lights) there are? I'm sorry to ask so many questions but the manual you posted is for several fixtures and I'm unsure of which it is. To be honest I'm not very knowledgable when it comes to LED's. I'm having to do a bit of research, but borrowing from someone in Stillwater of all places would be the absolute very best. Thanks and have a good one. |
There's actually a pretty decent number of reefers up here in stilly, you might be surprised.

As for the LEDs, Here are some pics I have. And again I must clarify that these are not mine. I would have to run things by my friend before officially passing them along.
