Just a heads up, Kolorscape sand is in the Kmart add for $2.69 per bag

Any idea why it says not for use in aquariums? I know the fizzle test has been done with this stuff and it's supposed to be aragonite. |
It isn't a good choice for freshwater aquariums.

Is it just fresh water?
That's what I've been using in my reef for well over a year now. My guess on why it says not for use in aquariums?... Maybe they have some sort of non-compete agreement with the more expensive "SW safe" sand for sale?
It is a release of liability issue.

It's also there for the same reason that warnings for certain perscription drugs say, "may cause nausea, upset stomach, diareah, headaches, priapism, swolen feet, arthritis, gangrene, or sometimes death." WOW!!! |
"Caution hot" on the side of a coffee cup. Because in this day and age people sue about anything.. LOL stupid people
I have 22 bags of it in my tank and so far so good.
I wouldn't have guessed for liability reasons because of them saying it's ideal for sandboxes which children play in... If I remember right the bag warns about breathing in silica dust which the state of CA believes can cause cancer. If I was them I'd be more likely to suggest aquarium use than sandboxes. :eek1:

Side note: our country needs a serious litigious overhaul. We are all sick of it.
I did some more reading and the "aquarium use" is FW like was said before. the aragonite based sand will lower the pH, which is undesirable for fw, but a good buffering agent for us. I'll be hitting the mart for some this week!!

has anyone seen and done the fizz test on the crayola sand (sand box sand) from walmart it comes in every color of the rainbow? I thought it would be pretty cool looking it comes in pink blue purple etc
Hamburg area peeps. Draudt Farms on Clarke street has this sand as well. (last time I was there a week ago)
kmart in webster is out. Anyone know if any kmarts on the East side has any?
I used it for two years, finally took it out and replaced caribsea. looks much more natural now.
I also believe it (Kolorscape) was contributing to my sps not coloring up all the way. maybe the silica in it? my Ph is has also gone up more since I replaced with caribsea. |
I just grabbed two bags so that I'll be ready when it's time to set up the 75. The Kmart on Hertel and Delaware in Buffalo has a pallet full of the stuff in the outdoor garden section in the back.

KOlorscape is the right one to use I thought? It is not silica based and many have used it
I just bought 6 bags at the new walmart in fulton for less than 3 bucks a bag. I put some in a cup with some vinegar and it fizzed like crazy. More than when I did the test with crushed coral. I'm assuming that means it is mostly aragonite sand.
