my 29 build
stand is 42 tall x 34 wide x 22 deep. it is larger than the display tank cause my sump tank (a 20 long) is the same length & width, so to make it fit inside the rails, i had to make it bigger than the main tank required. for the depth...i added a few inches so there would be room for the plumbing to be able to be hidden. i also added support members in the back & sides where the main tank will actually sit

canopy views. lights will be on a shelf that slides forward & rearward from center (forward to change bulbs & rearward for tank access). there are also (5) 2" vent holes in the top

lastly, i made a rear cover that helps to support the rear of the canopy & also covers the plumbing.

Deja Vu, Seems I've been here done that. Hopefully you'll get water in this one James!! Looks kike a mini 50gal. Did you really save any money by cutting 20 gal off the last one? Good Luck!
|
no not really :mad2:
the big stink of it came from my apt complex....since i live on the 2nd floor, they have a rule that any tank(s) over 55 gallons total, you have to sign a damage waiver for any water damage or stress damage from the weight. my 50 + 29 sump made me fall into that category. well my renter's insurance company refused to insure me if i signed such a waiver.....so there ya go :( |
Looks great. I have a 29 gathering dust. Ive been thinking about setting it up.
|
btw I really like the format you used to post the pics.

btw....in the 2nd set of pics (front & side views) the last pic shows the sump sitting at the back of the stand. i have since mounted a solid piece inside the rear back wall that i will use to mount my plumbing fixtures & probably my power strips as well.
then i plan on mounting a shelf above the sump to keep electrical plugs from falling into the sump tank & to have a place to store stuff. it will also have the LED grow light mounted to the bottom of it over the refugium section i'm also planning on eventually buying pieces of glass to make a small tank that will fit in the leftover front area that will serve as an ATO reservoir :) (figure 30w x 16t x 6d which equates to about 10-12gallons) |
hopefully in the next few days, i'll get the skin on, door openings cut out & the top & bottom on. then it'll be ready for a good orbital palm sander hitting & prep for paint :)
layed out all my plumbing on paper last nite & got all of that today at lowes, so i should have everything i need for that aspect of it. have my black eggcrate & 35lbs of ecorock from bulk reef supply....i just need to hit some of the pieces w/ a hammer & chisel to make smaller pieces for the rock wall think all i need is the glass baffles for the sump bubble traps cut...of course that is after i lay out my chamber dimensions on paper LOL |
james looking good. can't wait to see all done.
|
today, got 1/2 of the fan openings cut in the canopy, but the sawdust agravated my screwed up sinus & i started sneezing uncontrollably....well i sneezed so hard/many times i pulled the muscle that runs up the back of my neck
decided to stop working on it before my temper got the best of me & i started breaking stuff :mad2: hopefully, work will continue tomorrow..... |
I'm getting ready to build a stand for my 29. Planning on using a 20 long for my sump. Bad thing is my tank is already up and running. I have to first build new stand, tear it down and get it drilled, then set it all back up. Oh yeah I got to build my sump also.

feel free to use my dimensions for your build. i think when i figured mine, the minimum dimensions for the 20L to fit thru & inside the rails was 34 wide x 20 deep x however tall you want to make it. i used the DIY Stands thread for the individual board cut dimensions i can also give you the dimensions of my sump chambers if you want them as well :) |
looks like i have completed everything & am ready to sand & paint :)
full shot w/ both tanks & shelf installed http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...h_CIMG1675.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...h_CIMG1676.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...h_CIMG1677.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...h_CIMG1678.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...h_CIMG1679.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...h_CIMG1680.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...h_CIMG1691.jpg |

I like. Good work james. is that how the 50 was ging to look like. that is a nice set up start.

the difference is this one isn't as deep or tall & it is 3 seperate pieces, so it is a bit more "modular" & easier to deal with if ya look in some of the pics, you can see the original beast in the background...taking up the corner of my parking garage LOL i didn't start off making this a smaller version of the beast, but it kinda progressed into that since it had the same basis of the stand having to be bigger than the display tank required so as to make room for the sump tank to fit inside...... |
Nice wood working skills! Can't wait for the finished product.
|
i keep looking at the front of the canopy & think it looks so plain, but can't decide what to put there....if anything.
the lower part of the stand will have (2) doors plain front w/ no knobs...just 2 simple pieces of 1/2" plywood. dont care to do any fancy crown moulding, but that large flat area that is the flip-up front for some reason irks me...... btw...the whole thing is gonna be painted a semi-gloss black & the inside will be white kilz thoughts?? suggestions?? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...h_CIMG1675.jpg |
the more i looked at it, the more the flat plain large 34.5 x 12 area that is the front of the canopy irked me in it's plainness.....
thought about trim, moulding, etc....something to break up the nothingness. i was at my LFS & they had a large 150 gallon square tank that had a beautiful canopy on it. just like mine, the front section of it flipped up for light & tank access & it had some small front doors also. after playing around with it for a few minutes, i finally broke down & decided to put 2 small doors on the front of mine....form & function LOL that way, i can just open one of the doors to feed or do water tests instead of having to lift the whole front section up. i'm also thinking about making a small piece w/ the drilled holes for the test tubes like i did on standasaurus rex....only mounted on one of the doors instead of in the support bar like the last stand LOL cut some pieces to make a cutout jig for the edging bit of the router to follow & hopefully will get that cutout tomorrow..... |
canopy front door opening cut, doors for it cut, rest of the stand doors cut.
to add a bit of customizing to the doors, i bought a trimming bit & went all around the edges of all the doors too :) last pic is the doors on the canopy i saw at my LFS & is kinda what mine should look like except none of the moulding around them http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...h_CIMG1697.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...h_CIMG1698.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...h_CIMG1699.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...h_CIMG1701.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...h_CIMG1702.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...h_CIMG1703.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...h_CIMG1704.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...1227487277.jpg |
some new toys came today.....the bulk reef supply single canister carbon/gfo reactor & 1lb of each media. think i'm gonna have to modify the shelf for it to fit. figure best place to mount it for easy acces to do media changes is on one of the side doors, so i need to notch the shelf for it to fit
other toy is an american dj power switch....got a $25 gift card for my birthday to amazon.com so i decided to order it.....$29.99 & free shipping :D |
Very cool stand design, I like it. Looks great-your pictures are kinda small-but from what I can tell everything looks great.
Good luck. |
