dude..1/2" glass on a 10' long 30" high tank...thats a no no...i think you better increase it to 3/4" all around. who is building this tank? is it cross braced ever foot or something?

Fiziksgeek 05/18/2006 01:28 PM

The glass thickness also makes me nervous....

I like the idea of the geo thermal cistern. The ground tmp stays pretty constant and pretty cool compared with the tank. I am interested to see how is works...

nyvp 05/18/2006 02:06 PM

Exotic aquariums In south miami.
Most Tank builder say the 1/2" is fine 3/4" on the bottom.
Euro Braced around with 3 braces.

This is the tank Design

950 gallons of storage.. that doesnt count into twv cheater.... lol:hmm6:

nyvp 05/18/2006 03:59 PM

Hey why not 8 (
If its attached to my tank I count it. ( and i'm sticking to it )

Scuba_Dave 05/18/2006 05:41 PM

I want your tank :)

sabodish 05/18/2006 05:49 PM

good luck with this...im anxious to see how long it holds water being eurobraced with that thickness of glass. otherwise, its sweet. when i had my 360 it was built from 1/2" but it was 8' long and cross braced in three spots.

swegyptian 05/18/2006 05:49 PM

Couldn't you just have a vat of freshwater with a long line curled inside it, through which runs the saltwater? That might make life easier. It would probably work just as well for the cooling, but not as a system buffer.

nyvp 05/18/2006 07:36 PM

Scuba_Dave- I dont really like it much if you really want the tank its yours.

swegyptian-the whole idea of the cistern is its pretty much a closed loop

I'm going to talk to the builder about the 3/4 again tomorrow ...we'll see

pennyguy23 05/18/2006 08:49 PM

I have to agree with Bebo77. 950gl storage? First of all that big of a storage tank is point less. Thats more then the total tank and sump. So really the heading should be 550gl.
Now Wills thread is going to be a 2000gl system

You have to remember I'm turning over that tank 4-5 times an hr. It's not like the tank isn't a full flowing part of the system. As of being pointless I guess everyone has their own Idea's. To me anytime you can add volume to a tank you making the system that much better. The money I save on cooling the tank will also be nice.

Fiziksgeek 05/19/2006 06:13 AM

I would say the cistern storage counts against total tank volume...It might not be a pretty as the 1000g lagoon that I have seen here on RC, but it does play an important role. You get extra system volume, and hopefully cooling out of it.

And heck, at 550g, the tank is bigger then most...

Carl_in_Florida 05/19/2006 09:37 AM

He did say it was a 2000 system with a 550 gallon tank.

I like the stand idea.

Carl

nyvp 05/19/2006 10:48 AM

Ya the stand will be nice I'm going to use 2- 4" I beams with 1 1/2 .120 thick square tube frame on top of that. Then granite on top of that to finish it off.

Yeah, I don't know what that means. Make sure you post pics.

You removed the tile then laid and filled the cinderblocks right? How many bags did it take?

CArl

nyvp 05/19/2006 12:45 PM

no you leave the tile and put a sheet of plastic down and cut around it so you can remove later. No worry about it moving with all that weight. Should take less than 2 bags

nyvp 05/20/2006 11:03 AM

In goes the new double door.....

And my wife thinks its for her ....

Little did she know the real reason was I needed the extra 36" to get the tank into the house :D

You may want to go with at least 400 watt MH with the tank that deep if you will be putting any corals on the bottom. 250 watt wouldn't be strong enough to penetrate that deep. I'm no expert though.

nyvp 05/20/2006 12:26 PM

with the aqua sculpting that I'm doing the lowest anything will be is 24" and the outside edges will be t5's that I can always overdrive to 80watt if I need to. I understand where your coming from as with the 30"

dgasmd 05/20/2006 03:43 PM

Would love to come by and check it out as you are not too far from me (West Palm). The 950g storage tank will be a very nice touch, but I ahve to tell you it will considerably increase your running costs for carbon, salt, water, O/DI prefilters/DI resins, etc. If you end up not needing a chiller, then that is a great trade off.

nyvp 05/20/2006 03:57 PM

The aqua scaping will only go down to 24". I will be using T5'S on the outside of the MH's in 54 watt. If I need extra, I'll bump them up to 80 watt to hit the bottom.

Your invited anytime. I'm actually going to try and come to your meeting at the end of this month. You have one of the nicest tanks down here in south florida. When I started going through my build on paper I took a lot of info from you.

skriz 05/26/2006 07:51 PM

nyvp,

you tank is very similar to mine. 120 x 35 x 35.

however, mine in 3/4 starphire with eurobracing and cross bracing on the top.

I am also running 250w 10k xm in lumerarcs. however, i supplement with vho. better in this application, i think.

it's funny, because your setup is so similar it's like you looked at my data and copied it. having said that, if you have any questions let me know. I have made a ton of mistakes along the way and it sucks.

how are you doing the canopy?

I agree with you, if the tank water flows through it, it counts!

nyvp 05/26/2006 08:43 PM

how do you like your xm's?
My canopy will be kitchen cabinet tops built in so I can get up there and get my arm in.
What are some of the things you think you could have done better?
