Buildup in salt mixing tub
I have noticed that in my salt mixing tub I've got a brown scaley build up? I'm using two 18g Rubbermaid tots and it is plumbed together from fresh on top and salt on the bottom.
Does anyone else get this? What if any maintenance and cleaning of your salt mixing tubs are you doing? Thanks |
What salt are you using?

some salts have organics in them that can precipitate out. I just wash my barrel out occasionally. I also run an old eheim canister stuffed with floss in the barrel to help filter any solids out. |
I’m using Instant Ocean

I'm getting the same with Red Sea salt.

It’s just normal precipitate. It’s not hurting anything. I’d just leave it be.

It doesn't seem to hurt anything and the tub will get discolored over time. I remember my brutes would have a brown color.

I am using Instant Ocean Reef Crystals and I see the same. I have to clean the screen on my mixing pump or it slows down after a few weeks.

OK, normal buildup I guess. Just good to know I'm not alone. I just figure cleaning it out on occasion can't hurt. And by ocassion, I mean like 1 every 3-4 years! :-)

Dang I just spent a week cleaning my 75 gallon with Clorox and brushes etc. then rinsing out for days with RODI... it had about 18 high from the bottom this light film of brownish stuff. I use HW marine no organics it’s all lab grade. But looks like it was much ado about nothing.. I’m going to keep it moving for now on and use the BRS suggestion of heating and flowing for three days after the mixing to get better solubility and stability.
