Black Dogface Puffer Pictures

I can get the following black dogface puffers (these are actual pictures), 4 and 5 inches respectively. I like the first one more (although the picture is not as good), but am not even sure if I want a black one now. Does a yellow belly one look nicer?

I really like the first one. yellow dogface puffers are really rare. mostly you see the normal color morph with a yellow belly. the "golden puffer" you more commonly see for sale is the guinea fowl puffer. it gets bigger than a dogface puffer (16 or 18", I think), and IMO is more aggressive.

what you like is really up to you, but I think the black and dalmation dogface puffers are beautiful. if I thought I could keep two dogface puffers in a tank, my next one would be one of those types.

Thanks Lisa. I will probably get that first one.

You're right about that yellow belly, never saw one in stock anywhere.

I think you'll be happy with the black dogface. :)

I like the first one too. I think the black or dalmation are way cool. Also nice o see something different as well.

I agree, the first one. If I could find an all black dogface, I would probably have no problems picking it up!

Don't get the 1st one. It is very boring, I like the more dalmation-y second. The second one with more white is more interesting. Yellow bellies are much prettier though and ime equally hard to find. I've had two yellow bellies and both have had bright orange bellies. Here is my current one, the pic doesn't show him that well. This was when he was just acclimating and he was still faded http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j1...s/IMG_6523.jpg

and here is the one I had that unfortunately died of velvet a couple monthes ago. RIP little buddy.:(

Really nice Yellow bellies are my favorite puffer because of their abstract assortment of colors and their dog-like narrow snout. They are half orange with a tan saddle which is more interesting than all one color like the black or complete golden. They also have an olive and white beard and an interesting mask around their eyes. Typically though when you see yellow bellies they only have a yellow throat or a little yellow, it is hard to find really nice ones like mine.

To say it simply, Nice Yellow belly dogfaces own.

I don't think you can lose with either fish. They are both awesome.

i also think the dalmation are better, i used to want a black dogface but after i have seen them they are boring just all black, i mean its like a black nox angel theres nothing to it. dog face are cool fish but the dalmation is the way to go. if the like the all black then get it, its really what you like.

LisaD 01/31/2009 05:26 AM

if it's still available, the dalmation at bluezoo aquatics is about the nicest I've ever seen. I usually like the all black puffers best, but this dalmation is really nice.

That is not a what you see is what you get. No one has seen the bluezoo fish. I wouldn't trust it unless I saw pic. It might not be any better than the 2nd option of the black dog with a little white. If it were me I'd wait out until I saw an actual specimen pic of a dalmation or a yellow belly.

Grouperhead 01/31/2009 10:15 AM

I like the bottom one a lot more. Both are nice, but like Mel said the first one is kinda boring. I like how the second specimen has a little bit of white/gray. Gives you a little more to ooh and aah about. :)

you don't really know unless you call and ask. they didn't have any pictures posted until they got these fish in, so I think there is a chance it IS wysiwyg. though it shouldn't be assumed. I would call and ask, and if the fish available was NOT the one pictured, I'd ask them to send a pic.

FishyMel 01/31/2009 12:52 PM

That was the pic they had a couple of weeks ago before they had any in stock and I put them on email alert. So I think it can be said it is not the actual fish. I've asked places for pics of what the specimen looks like and the best I've ever had them do is give a description.

black dogface puffers are my absolute favorite puffer, and maybe favorite fish! if i had a large enough tank, or more accurately if my apartment's floors could support, i would get a 150g tank for that puffer!! my LFS (thatpetplace) has a black dogface puffer that is in great condition. i saw him last week and yesterday (absolutely magnificent) and he is very attentive to anyone that makes eye contact with him!!

FishyMel 02/01/2009 02:43 PM

Really? That is pretty sweet.

Here is the link. The stock pic looks real nice but you siad that you've seen the actual guy and he is sweet-looking. Huge for a black.

MatthewLaw 02/01/2009 03:15 PM

that's him!!! very attentive and alert!!!
