Reef Bommie

I present my new project, the "Reef Bommie"

Many of you already know me by my last aquarium, Iwagumi Reef, where the minimalist style was the hallmark of the aquarium.
Well, in this new project I want everything to turn around naturalness. The idea came a year ago when I discover walking alone the spanishs beaches these rocks uncovered at low tide:

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4539/...f31490d2_b.jpg

Immediately I was fascinated by the simplicity and harmony that nature is able to create in their forms.
From here, I started looking for something similar to these simple rocks on the reef, and I concluded that my next tank will recreate a Bommie:
Structures of isolated and independent coral that can be as small as a beach ball or as large as a car.
They are structural oasis surrounded by sandy, which provide shelter and housing to many marine organisms on the reef.
These reef structures are named "bommies", Aboriginal word meaning outcrop reef or ride.

Any examples of bommies in nature:

Unless some change such as skimmer or the location of the vortech (which I will explain below), I will keep the same team:
- Tank: 36 x 36 x 20 inches optical glass (100 gallons cube)
- Stand: ELOS Square 36 x 36 x 32 inches
- Pump return: Tunze silent 600 gal/h
- Circulation: 2 Vortech MP40w
- Lighting: Sfiligoi 12 T5 x 39w
New equipment:
- Skimmer: Reef Octopus SSS150
- Carbon reactor: Bubble Magus MF70-H

I'm sure it will be another succesful reef.
Will you use the Igwami's tank or this is going to be a whole new set up?

Mucha suerte con tu nuevo proyecto!

For scaping were used 41 lb of live rock "Pukani", which have previously been cured during 1 month in a container with little light and a couple of small pumps to circulation:

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4528/...1b6e32cc_b.jpg

I've also used 13 lb of rock (mostly Deepwater) I had in the sump of Iwagumi ... in total, I used about 55 lb of rock to create the Bommie.

And after a whole morning shaping the structure, this is the result today (put it in HD):

The water flow is critical in this new project, because not only want to make a natural scaping but also get some forms of growth the most natural possible in the corals... for this reason, I located the two pumps faced to get a great water turbulence on top of bommie, where I will place the most demanding species, as acroporas humilis, Pocilloporids, etc.

Your last tank was stunning, no doubt this will eclipse it!

westreef 06/27/2015 08:16 PM

I like your scape very much. The music is so soothing. Did you pick that music or you had help?

undeadmoto 06/27/2015 08:37 PM

Looks great so far can't wait to see the Corals grow into it

Scape is looking good yano. I'm looking forward to watching this project take shape. Will you be adding any corals from your previous tank, or start with all new?

I simply chose the music from the music apple sample. I thought I would start the new reef with relaxing music.

I will keep 12-14 frags of my last aquarium.

Later I'll incorporate some new corals.

Pife 06/28/2015 09:28 AM

Subscribed. I'm sure this new reef will be just as amazing as your last.

Vortech run in lagoon mode to 50%. Maybe try reef crest mode to 60-70%, but I think I prefer lagoon mode because it moves more water.

What bulbs are you using?

yano 06/30/2015 04:37 AM

reefmutt 07/01/2015 03:54 PM

nice bommie beginning!
i don't remember your old bulb combo, but i do know that you preferred a look closer to natural daylight. This combo seems to be more on the blue side. Is this intentional or am I just mistaken about what your bulb combo will look like?
When will corals go in?
