Weird, though I always use the black ones, not sure if those are different softer material.

Are you doing the hot water trick to slide hoses on?

I always soak my lines in hot water, makes them very pliable in seconds, very easy to slip on and I tend to oversize barb some so they are very tight, almost no need for clamps

I've used both the nylon ones (in your picture) and the PVC ones. The PVC ones (I've used white and gray) are certainly much beefier and I prefer them. Still though that is pretty strange, never seen that before.

What the heck are you doing to them? I've got similar fittings that are well over 25 years old that are still perfectly fine. It looks like you squished it with channel locks!

Looks like operator error

Yeah I was thinking over clamping and crushing myself.

try to find pvc or abs barbs. much more heavy duty.

Definitely!

As for cleaning them, those in your picture are nylon and are, indeed, a little softer than either ABS (can be a bit brittle for my tastes) or PVC so you don't want to attack them with a wire brush! I just drop mine in a small container of muriatic acid for a couple seconds and then rinse under the tap. (outside only, with gloves and EYE PROTECTION)

This is actually the second one. First one failed 5 years ago and both are from 2002 when my tank was new and used on a ball valve. I've tore down the tank once and set it up again 8 years ago never touched the attached hose since. I can understand a metal clamp crushing it but how can a simple nylon clamp its not strong enough?
