How many clown fish can i have in a 40 gallon breeder.

I have two clown fish, but my wife would like another. Was wondering how many i could have without problems.

I think that 3 is too much. Two will eventually pair up and the third clown will be chased and bullied... possibly to death.

Like has been mentioned, a pair is the best amount. 3 might work in the short term, but once that pair starts to pair up and spawn, they will become very aggressive towards the 3rd clown. It can happen darn near overnight, and the 3rd clown could be bullied to death before you are able to intervene (( learned this lesson about 15 years ago )).

No matter how many you start with... you will most likely end up with two :)

And it's not a pleasant death for those that don't make it.
