Chaeto

I’ve been growing chaeto in my sump for several months as a means to reduce phosphates. Is it necessary to remove large amounts from time to time to “export” phosphates or are they bound within the chaeto?

Thanks

Yes you want to remove some to export those out of the tank completely..

Quite frankly if you have chaeto in a tank and don't need to take a ton out every month or less out of absolute necessity just because its totally overgrown the space then something isn't right..

can i ask, what lighting are you using? or the size of the chaeto you started with and your refugium set up etc etc. The reason i ask is i started my first refugium with a full spectrum light (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1) that ran from midnight - 10am. DT lights on at 15:00 - 23:00. but my chaeto never grew, i had lots of green hair algae and the phosphate carried on increasing untill i started with my dual GFO and dosing. i'm about to re-start the refugium and i hope i get it to grow, any help would be appriciated

I've grown chaeto like crazy with anything from a 6500k 13W CFL to a 10W LED bulb to the 165W (running at less than 30% over a 16 x 12" area or so) Chinese black box I'm using now..

Light alone is not the only "key to success".. Most macros don't need much light..
I think I run my fuge lights for about 14 hours.. (basically opposite display tank schedule which is on for like 10 hours)
