The superman milli. started out as a bright green maricultured colony.It stayed at LFS for a long time in a dimmly lit corner of the tank and turned solid brown and had very poor polyp extension.I put it at the very bottom of my tank to let it adjust to the light but even that was too much and it bleached completely.It took several months for it to finaly start growing blue tips and gradualy the branches started to turn red.

so a pink millepora with blue tips is now a superman mille?

Yes, the name game with corals has really taken off these days, although I don't mind naming the corals, it's an easier reference, some of them just get abused to the point of there being 10 different Supermans out there. We're gonna get to the point of actually having to obtain a certificate of authenticity attached with our coral purchases to prove lineage ;)

definatly easier to reference, but i agree everyones gonna sooner then later claim they have le corals becuase they "looK" similar

Yeah Kevin you said it all.
It seem's funny to want the "names" to stay correct and not be abused............. but scientifically it's all an abuse I suppose.
But I agree it is much easier than saying "I have this cool orange base montipora with bright green large polyps" at least when you say "Sunset" everyone know which one your talking about, even if its not 100% correct lineage, if it looks really close then they know what your talking about.

LOL! I know I am in the WRONG place to be a Eagles/Phillies/Flyers fan! I lived in the Philly region for 36 years so it's born and bred into me, it makes for intresting topics at work that's for sure! :)

If we really want to split hairs, remember the SPS, LPS, Softy categorization draws party line divisions that are not non scientific.

I like the naming thing for the pieces that transcend from "pink milli" and has taken on an identity unique to itself that separates it from the rest and resides in the reefkeeping culture for one unique reason or another. After all, the Declaration of Independence is just a musty old piece of paper isn't it?

Unfortunately, there are two groups involved: The hobbyist and the merchandiser. While my description and appreciation for this is coming from a collector and hobbyist point of view, there has been a surge in naming recently for pieces that just don't need to be. I pay these marketing ploys no bother and don't consider pieces until they are established by the reefkeeping community as valuable, not the retailers. Sure, I could name a piece tomorrow "dot's dippin' dots", but if its a turd of a coral and it doesn't stand out in the crowd, why bother naming a piece that won't be around long and slip back into obscurity as most of these do.

However, in a ever increasing competitive coral market, any sliver of a coral to be the next "big thing" will most likely get a name so that person can claim "ownership" in finding it, and tag along for the ride with the popularity of the piece. Its this reason I forsee more problems in the future of the same piece carrying two different names at the same time, and problems with phonies being slipped in, all in all creating an ocean of uniqly named pieces deviating from the original purpose of seperating the cream from the crop.

(Thats why we will confuse them and use "Pink Milli" and "Acropora sp." for the important intead since those are the "rare" ones these days);)

The LE thing is still grassroots based if you think about it from the lineage and networking required points of view, which helps distract from the sticker price the mainstream demand and popularity has created.

I have always been hesitant to call the "blue" tipped millipora, "blue tipped" even.

I have been curious if it is the pigments that are blue, or a reflection from higher K bulbs and/or Actinics, and in reality are really "white"?

Well I love Ming Wei but if anyone is guilty of over-naming corals (ahem.. and renaming to keep up with current fads) he would be given the chair! Ditto goes for many online etailers, I personally like reefermadness because he goes beyond names he gives a lyrical description as well! :D

But for the most part I agree whole-heartily with what dots say, I name corals in jest and a kind of silent protest to all the naming of corals, I mean my blue with red/green eyed favia that I've had for years gets sold by a reputable online coral e-tailer, catches the eye of one particular man who's seen most everything there is in corals, and bammo... gets called "Triple Threat" . I don't call mine that btw, mine is Underroos Favia (but I don't name which superhero they're named after) :)

I think the SPS world is simply catching up with zoanthid world, where everything has a name it seems. No one sells green zoas anymore, they're greeny meany, or nuclear green, or etc.
