Anyone still using Volcano skimmers?
Doing a tank upgrade and still using my Volcano 1860. Does anyone else still run one? Those of you that don't , what did you switch to?
Thanks, Todd |
Guess not.
What did you replace it with? |
this might be a sore subject for a lot of people:eek1: :eek2:
|
Just curious, why might it be a sore subject?
|
The builder of the skimmer left his customers with lots of issues.
they spent a lot of money and the skimmer was performing well below expectations. |
I see. Ty, Paulairduck. That really stinks.
|
To top it off the builder seems to have made off with quite a few large down payments.

Reefaquariumnut is running two Bk's, Tom obrecht is out of the hobby, wizsmaster is moved on and moved on to a reeflo form his mini volcano, I think everyone else is still running their volcano's.
Energy is still the best example of what a volcano can do, his skimmer still works great and he has one of the largest tanks/bioloads on reefcentral. |
I'm still running mine, I did purchase Tom's tank and still working on getting it set up.I'm trying to get the upgrade right.I'll have around 600 gallons total. Trying to see if there is a better alternative, or stick with what I have. The owners thread has kinda dryed up. I do hate to give up on the skimmer, lot of $$ invested.Don't really want to change unless I know I'll get better results with something else.

Honestly the skimmers have a ton of potential if you're willing to work with them. Regardless of the performance $3,000 which i believe is what the 1860's were selling for is a good deal for the body alone. They are built like a tank and proportions are great, regardless of the cone revolution going on now.
Just work on tweaking it for your system, are you/what airpump are you currently running? There are a couple options, sparks is testing the ATB/laguna 4200 on their volcano right now which is most likely what I'll be using on mine when its finished. Another solid option is going old school, which works very well and using the alita and air stones, jnarowe has great success with his airstone skimmer as have many others. |
I'm using an Alita 40 full open now.Did have some performance issues related to a clogged venturi. Was a pita to clean with the design.Very interested in ther Laguna as well. Will it be force fed, or natural?Agreed an proportions and construction.. Body and neck size very good. Can't imagine what they would cost for the materials used if they were mainstream.
|
I'm sure it will have to be forcefed for significant performance, thats a lot of head height for any naturally aspirated pump to do. It has a much larger volute than the dart though and should be able to handle a lot more air.

Reeflow Orca 250.
|
Still using my 1850 but added linear air pump. I am thinking add adding some more holes on the bubble plate. Anyone here with an opinion on this? Thanks!

i would love to see them still in action!!! fizhfly, what size is your volcano? |
At least two LFS in the Twin Cities (Minneapolis/St. Paul) are using Volcano skimmers still. Saltwater Empire uses several of them on their different fish/coral systems. Ocean Devotion has one running on their large frag/coral system.
