Safe for water storage?

Looking to up my WC station. I’m at Home Depot and curious as to whether or not “commercial” grade is just as fine, if not equal to “food” grade? Any advice?https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a763206c1c.jpg

Perfect....been using these for more than 5 years....
Got to clean them out once in a while...

Brute's are reef safe. If you look at the recycling symbol on them there should be a number 2 in the middle that means its NSF which is food safe.

i've been using brutes exclusively for almost 3 years now. no problems to report. one of my favorite pieces of kit.

2 just means its HDPE plastic..
It does NOT imply a food safe certification process (NSF,etc..)..

But yes Brute cans are just fine.. as is virtually all other plastic.
I have used just about all types of plastic containers in one way or another in this hobby..
If its a plastic container of any sort I have no problem using it.. I just give it a good cleaning before use and go with it..

Oh, and, just to reiterate. I’m wanting to put my RO water in the Brute. Mixing my salt. Put my power head and heater in it. And use it when I need it. Normally once weekly-biweekly. Still safe?

Just want to make sure everyone’s not referring to it only being safe to mix saltwater in, and immediately empty it

Brutes do not have the 2 symbol... at least not any more.. the one I got a week or 2 ago is a 4 or 5.. I'm not exactly sure and it's full of water so I can't check right now

Yes. I have room for just one barrel (or I haven't gotten around to setting up #2) so I keep it full of ro/di between water changes to use as topoff, and then the day before water changes I dump in the slat, let it mix for 12-24 hours and go for it.

And I'm with mcgyvr about the plastic - my 55g barrel was used to store either photographic developer or fixer. I washed it well and have been using it for nearly 30 years.

And yes, I rinse it down about twice a year or as-needed:D

No need to heat or keep it heated. I do AWC of 2 gallons a day, so I make up 55 gallons at a time, then once mixed well (24 or so hours) I turn the mixing pump off also.
If you feel the need to heat it, just drop the heater in the barrel, even if it's resting on the bottom, it's not going to melt or harm the plastic.
