Look in your tank with a flashlight in the morning before the sun comes up and the lights come on and you should see them on the glass or rocks. You most likely won't see that wonderful shell of theirs though, what you'll likely see is a black/grey blob with similarly colored protrusions, that's the mantle. It covers the shell when they're out and about and accounts for why the shells of coweries are so shiny. I have two myself and never see them during daylight hours, but, the tell tale munch marks through the algae on the glass tell me that they're still there, also when I look for them in the morning when everything is still dark.
